PAC-10 TOURNAMENT CHAMPS: The STANFORD Cardinal captured the 2003 State Farm Pac-10 Women's Basketball Tournament title, and with it the league's automatic NCAA Tournament berth. Ninth-ranked Stanford downed No. 21 Arizona 59-49, Mar. 10 at HP Pavilion at San Jose. Stanford JR F Nicole Powell was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player, averaging 18.3 points, 9.3 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.7 steals in the Cardinal's three tournament wins. Powell scored 19 points and posted five assists and four rebounds in the Championship Game.

ARIZONA WILDCATS
The Arizona Wildcats (22-8, 13-5 Pac-10) are the No. 6 seed in the East Region and travel to Manhattan, Kan., to face No. 11 Notre Dame (19-10) on Sat., Mar. 23... The winner will meet the winner of the No. 3 Kansas State (28-4)-No. 14 Harvard (22-4) matchup... UA is 1-2 against Notre Dame in the all-time series, the last meeting a 72-70 Arizona win on Nov. 24, 2001, in Tucson... The Cats have never met Kansas State and are 2-0 all-time against Harvard... Arizona is making its fifth NCAA Tournament appearance and first since 2000... UA is 5-4 in NCAA Tournament games, all under current head coach Joan Bonvicini... FR C Shawntinice 'Polkey' Polk, the 2003 Pac-10 Freshman of the Year and an All-Pac-10 selection, leads the Conference in rebounding (10.6 rpg), field goal percentage (.622) and blocked shots (2.57 bpg) and ranks third in scoring (17.5 ppg)... Polk is on track to become the first freshman (true or redshirt) in Pac-10 history to finish the season ranked in the league's Top-10 in scoring, rebounding and field goal percentage... UA went 2-1 in the 2003 Pac-10 Tournament, defeating Oregon State (70-56) in the quarterfinals, Washington (74-51) in the semifinals and falling to Stanford (59-49) in the Championship Game... Three Wildcats were named to the Pac-10 All-Tournament Team - Polk, SR F Krista Warren and SO G Dee-Dee Wheeler... Wheeler joined Polk on the All-Pac-10 Team, while FR G Natalie Jones received All-Freshman honorable mention acclaim... The Cats were the No. 8 seed in the 2000 NCAA Tournament, downing No. 9 seed Kent in the first round but falling to No. 1 seed Tennessee in the second round.

STANFORD CARDINAL
The Pac-10 regular-season Champion as well as this year's Pac-10 Tournament Champion, Stanford (26-4, 15-3 Pac-10) is the No. 3 seed in the West Region and will host No. 14 Western Michigan (20-11) Saturday... The winner of that game takes on the winner of the No. 6 Minnesota (23-5)-No. 11 Tulane (19-9) game... Stanford defeated Western Michigan 80-66 in the two teams' lone previous meeting, Dec. 18, 1999... The Cardinal are 2-0 all-time against the Golden Gophers and 1-0 against the Green Wave... Stanford downed Tulane 77-55 in NCAA Tournament second round action last year at Maples Pavilion... This is Stanford's 15th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and 17th overall, which ranks eighth among all Division I programs... The Cardinal posts a 36-14 (.720) all-time record in NCAA Tournament play and has advanced to six Final Fours and captured two NCAA titles (1990, 1992)... JR F Nicole Powell, the 2003 Pac-10 Tournament Most Outstanding Player and a three-time All-Pac-10 selection, is one of 20 finalists for the Naismith Women's College Basketball Player of the Year Award... Powell, who ranks second in the Pac-10 in scoring (18.7 ppg), averaged 18.3 points, 9.3 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.7 steals in the Cardinal's three Pac-10 Tournament wins... She finished 9-of-18 from three-point range in the tournament... SO G Kelley Suminski was also named to the Pac-10 All-Tournament Team, while both Powell and Suminski were named to the All-Pac-10 Team... Despite missing the first nine games with a back injury, Powell has notched a Pac-10 third-best nine double-doubles this season and has seven 20-point games... Cardinal head coach Tara VanDerveer, a 2002 Women's Basketball Hall of Fame inductee, was named the 2003 Pac-10 Coach of the Year, her second consecutive such selection and sixth overall... In 23-plus seasons on the collegiate sidelines, VanDerveer is 575-159 (.783)... In 16-plus seasons on The Farm, she is 423-108 (.797) and has led Stanford to two NCAA Championships (1990 & 1992) and five Final Four appearances.

WASHINGTON HUSKIES
The Washington Huskies (22-7, 13-5 Pac-10) are the No. 9 seed in the West Region and will face No. 8 seed Wisconsin-Green Bay Saturday in Eugene, Ore... The winner takes on the winner of the No. 1 Louisiana State (27-3)-No. 16 Southwest Texas State (18-13) game... Saturday's meeting marks the first ever between UW and Wisconsin-Green Bay, while the Huskies are 1-0 all-time against both LSU and Southwest Texas State... Washington is making its second NCAA Tournament berth in the last three years, 14th overall and fourth under current head coach June Daugherty... Three of the five starters from Washington's 2001 NCAA Elite Eight team are starters on the current squad - JR C Andrea Lalum, JR G Giuliana Mendiola and SR G Loree Payne... UW posts a 14-13 all-time record in NCAA Tournament play, including a 7-2 mark in first round games... UW tied for second place in the Pac-10 Conference with Arizona (13-5), the second straight second-place Conference finish for the Huskies and the most Pac-10 wins in a single season under Daugherty, who has led UW to 22 wins for the second time in three years (22-10 in 2001)... The Huskies posted a 1-1 record in the 2003 Pac-10 Tournament, defeating USC (64-63) in the quarterfinals and falling to Arizona (74-51) in semifinal action... UW is led by 2003 Pac-10 Player of the Year Giuliana Mendiola (17.3 ppg/6.7 rpg, 5.4 apg), a Kodak All-America finalist... Mendiola, the first Husky player ever to be named Pac-10 Player of the Year, has scored in double figures in all but three games this season, while notching eight double-doubles... She has scored at least 20 points in eight of the team's last 11 games... Payne joined Mendiola on the All-Pac-10 Team and the senior is a two-time All-Conference selection... Payne, the UW career leader in 3-point field goals (244), ranks second on the Pac-10's all-time chart... Payne is only the 17th player in Washington history to 1,000 points and ninth to score 1,500 points (currently sixth all-time in UW scoring with 1,668 points).

WOMEN'S NIT PARTICIPANTS

ARIZONA STATE SUN DEVILS
This year's NIT bid marks the fourth consecutive postseason invitation for the Sun Devils, who played in the Women's NIT in 2000 and made NCAA Tournament appearances in 2001 and 2002... The Sun Devils host Hawaii (16-13) Thursday night in the first round of the NIT... The winner takes on the winner of the first-round matchup between Northern Iowa (18-10) and Baylor (20-10)... Dates and times of second-round games will be determined after each game... The Sun Devils are 2-2 all-time in postseason NIT action... ASU finished eighth in the Conference this season (15-13, 7-11 Pac-10), earning the No. 8 seed in the Pac-10 Tournament... The Sun Devils fell to No. 9 seed California in opening-round action, 46-38... In 2000, Arizona State fell to Colorado State 66-54 in the first round o the Women's NIT in Fort Collins, Colo... One of the top defensive teams in the Conference, ASU ranks second in the Pac-10 in rebounding defense, allowing just 33.6 rebounds per game... The Sun Devils are also ranked third in the league in scoring defense, allowing just 61.6 points per contest... The Sun Devils also continue to lead the league in three-point shooting defense, a category the team has paced the Pac-10 in three of the last four years... This season, ASU is allowing its opponents to shoot just 29.4 percent from three-point land... Three of ASU's true freshmen continue to lead the team and rank in the top 20 in the Pac-10 in scoring and rebounding... FR G Jill Noe, a Pac-10 All-Freshman selection, ranks first on the team and 12th in the Pac-10 in scoring at 12.4 points per contest... Noe has led the team in scoring in 12 of the last 24 games, including a career-best 23 points Jan. 2 vs. Oregon State and again Jan. 11 at Washington State... Noe is also third on the team and 17th in the Pac-10 in rebounding (5.9 rpg). FR F Amy Denson, another Pac-10 All-Freshman honoree, ranks 11th in the Pac-10 in rebounding (6.0 rpg), while fellow FR Kristen Kovesdy leads the team and is 10th in the league in the category (6.1 rpg).

OREGON STATE BEAVERS
The Oregon State Beavers earned their third straight postseason berth and host UNLV (17-10) Friday night in opening-round Women's NIT action... The winner will meet the winner of the Santa Clara (20-10)-Fresno State (18-11) contest... OSU is hosting a first-round postseason NIT game for the third year in a row... This week's game marks the Beavers' fifth appearance in the Women's NIT, with prior showings in 1980, 1982, 2001 and 2002 - winning the NIT titles in 1980 and 1982... Oregon State earned its first postseason victory since 1995 in the 2002 postseason Women's NIT, knocking off Hawaii 62-50 on March 14... The Beavers are 7-2 all-time in postseason NIT action (.778)... Oregon State tied for fifth place in the Pac-10, finishing 14-14 overall and 8-11 in league play.... OSU finished the 2001-02 campaign in a tie for fourth place, and he Beavers had not finished in the Conference's Top-5 in back-to-back seasons since the 1994-95 and 1995-96 campaigns...OSU posts a 12-2 home record this year, its best record since going 13-2 in Gill Coliseum in 1994-95... The No. 6 seed in the 2003 Pac-10 Tournament, Oregon State fell to No. 3 seed and eventual runner-up Arizona, 70-56... Oregon State went 2-5 against teams ranked in the Top-25 this season, recording a 71-65 overtime victory against then-No. 24 Arizona on Jan. 30 and earning a 100-86 victory over then-No. 23 Washington on Feb. 20... All-Pac-10 Team selection JR G Leiliani Estavan ranks second in the Pac-10 in assists (4.71 apg), second in assist-turnover ratio (1.89) and eighth in free throw percentage (.780)... Estavan has started 68 consecutive games... JR F Hollye Chapman (12.0 ppg/6.0 rpg) was named All-Pac-10 honorable mention, while FR G Casey Bunn received Pac-10 All-Freshman honorable mention acclaim... JR C Brina Chaney ranks second in the league in blocked shots (2.25 bpg) and ninth in rebounding (6.1 rpg)... One of the Pac-10's top defensive squads, Oregon State ranks second in scoring defense (61.5 ppg), second in blocks (3.82 bpg), third in 3-point field goal defense (.399) and third in rebounding defense (34.9 rpg).
