Stanford Press Conference Quotes
Stanford Head Coach Tara VanDerveer
'We are really excited to be playing in the NCAA Tournament. We are looking forward to our game against Western Michigan, and we have been working really hard and having good practices.'
ON PLAYING WESTERN MICHIGAN:
'We know they are an excellent team or else they would not be here. We have also played against two of their players in the past and they are very offensive-minded. We are really going to be challenged defensively, but again we are really excited to play and we are focused on playing our game. Whoever it is you play in the first game, you do not move on unless you play well and we will be challenged to play well.'
ON CONCERNS WESTERN MICHIGAN BRINGS:
'There are a lot of things that concern you when a team averages 80 points a game, you know they can score and shoot. They have several outstanding players, are very well coached and play within a system. Their game probably starts inside with Kristin Koetsier, she was out here before and I was impressed with her as a freshman. We are really going to have to defend inside and watch their perimeter shooters.'
ON NCAA TOURNAMENT EXPERIENCE:
'I do not think it makes a big difference with the conference tournaments, it gives both teams a feeling for tournaments. They would not be here if they had not won their tournament, and they found a way to win it. They have risen to the occasion against top-ranked teams and they are excited to be here.'
Stanford guard Susan King
ON WESTERN MICHIGAN:
'They have a great presence inside and they also have a really good wing player. We are just focusing on our game and also playing tenacious defense. I think that will win the game for us in the end.'
ON THE FLOOR:
'I remember the first time I played on it, when I was 15 at a basketball camp. You notice it at first, but as far as playing on it now I think you notice it more when you go to other gyms. You notice that the floor is a bit harder and tougher, but I have not heard any comments from other teams.'
ON STANFORD'S DEFENSE:
'Defense has been a big team emphasis the entire year, and that is what will win games for us. Our coaches have done an excellent job making us realize it every day. We hit a point in the year where we were not as aggressive, but we spent a week on it in practice and from that point on we have taken it to a new level.'
Stanford forward T'Nae Thiel
ON THE WAR SITUATION:
'The only we can do right now is to continue doing what we have been doing all year and really realize how precious the opportunity is. We are living out our dreams playing in this tournament and we need to take full responsibility of the opportunities and really give it our best.'
ON STANFORD'S DEFENSE:
'Defense is maybe not the most fun aspect of the game all of the time, but it is something that you can take great pride in. I think that as a team we do take pride in it, and it shows.'
