March 21, 2003
KANSAS CITY - Sophomore Shane Webster continued his run at the NCAA Championships by defeating No. 4 Ryan Lange of Purdue, 3-2, in the quarterfinals. Webster, who is now guaranteed All-America status, will face Pittsburgh's Carl Fronhofer in the semifinals later this evening.
With the match tied, 1-1, late in the third period, Webster countered a shot from Lange and gained control for the takedown and the 3-1 lead. Lange escaped with around 10 seconds left to make the final score, 3-2.
Fronhofer, unseeded at the tournament but ranked No. 14 in the nation, and Webster met at the Reno Tournament of Champions in December. In that match, Webster scored a pin, his second of two falls this season, at the 5:56 mark. The other two wrestlers in the final four of the championship bracket are No. 3 Robbie Waller of Oklahoma and No. 7 Brad Dillon of Lehigh.
Session four of the NCAA Championships will begin at 3:30 PST. Results will be updated at www.ncaasports.com/wrestling/mens.
