Cougs Fall To Californa 9-3

BERKELEY, Calif. -- - The California Bears used a pair of three-run innings to fuel a 9-3 win over visiting Washington State in a Pacifiic-10 Conference baseball game Saturday afternoon at Evans Diamond.
Derek Bruce had two of WSU's six hits, but otherwise the Cougar offense produced little offense. Nick Kenyon (1-1) started for WSU and worked 5.1 innings while allowing seven hits and seven runs, four of them earned. Karl Mejlholm and James Freeman finished up for WSU, with Freeman recording the last four outs while giving up just one single.
Bear starter Brian Montalbo (3-2) worked seven innings for California (15-10 overall, 2-0 in conference play), striking out five while allowing two runs and five hits. Aaron Swick, Mike Padgett and Brent Hale finished up for the Bears.
WSU's runs came with single tallies in the fourth, fifth and eighth innings, while the Bears scored three time sin the third, three times in the sixth and twice in the seventh. They also had a single run in the fifth, giving them their nine runs in the middle five innings.
The Cougars scored in the fourth when Bruce opened the inning with a single and moved to third on Steve Mortimer's single. He then came home when Mortimer was caught attempting to steal second and was out heading back to first.
In the fifth, Jay Miller's fly out to center allowed Bruce Jacobsen to score from third. Jacobsen opened the inning with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Brandon Reddinger, then moved to third on a balk.
WSU's final tally came in the eighth. With two outs Robert Stahlke singled, moved to third on a balk and eventually scored from third on a passed ball.
The Cougars and Bears conclude their three-game series Sunday with a single game at noon. Bryce Chamberlin is expected to start for WSU.
