March 22, 2003
Stanford, Calif. - After a 12-day break due to final exams, the 12th-ranked Stanford softball team got mixed results in its first games back against San Diego State on Saturday afternoon, splitting a doubleheader. The Aztecs (21-12) shutout the Cardinal in the first contest 2-0, but Stanford (22-8) rebounded to take the nightcap 3-0.
The first game was scoreless until the third inning, when San Diego State took a 1-0 lead. Jacque Vaca doubled to left scoring Janna Kovensky with two outs. Stanford threatened in the bottom of the fourth when Cassi Brangham (Clovis, CA) led off the inning with a single and advanced to third on Maureen LeCocq's (Woodland Hills, CA) double down the left field line. The Cardinal could not get a run in, stranding runners at second and third.
The Aztecs added an insurance run in the fifth on Kovensky's single for a 2-0 advantage. Stanford rallied in the seventh but still could not push a score across, stranding 12 base runners in the contest.
Dana Sorensen (San Diego, CA) took the loss for Stanford, falling to 9-2. She pitched the complete game, striking out 11 and scattering five hits. Catalina Morris (Sonoita, AZ) led the Cardinal offense, going 2-for-3 at the plate, while LeCocq went 2-for-4. Bre DeSanta picked up the win for San Diego State to stand at 10-3.
In the nightcap Stanford got on board first, scoring in the fourth inning. Kira Ching (San Lorenzo, CA) singled to right and advanced to second on Jessica Allister's (Nocogdoches, TX) sacrifice bunt. Brangham then stepped up with a double to left center, scoring Ching and giving the Cardinal a 1-0 lead.
Stanford starter Tori Nyberg (Belmont, CA) shut down the Aztecs in order in the fifth and sixth innings. The Cardinal's bats came alive again in the sixth, with Allister starting the one-out rally with a single. She later scored on Brangham's second double of the game. LeCocq followed with a base hit plating Brangham, extending the Cardinal advantage 3-0. With two outs, Leah Nelson (Oakland, CA) recorded a pinch-hit double to right center moving pinch runner Heather Shook (Whittier, CA) to third. San Diego State starter Deanna Richards then got pinch hitter Laura Severson (Frankfort, IL) to ground out.
Nyberg got the win for Stanford, improving to 10-4. She finished with six strikeouts and allowed just three hits in seven innings of work. Brangham accounted for much of the offense, going 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI. Allister was a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate for the Cardinal.
Stanford will look to continue its winning ways tomorrow, when they host Illinois-Chicago. The doubleheader will begin at 12 p.m. at the Boyd & Jill Smith Family Stadium.
