W-Golf In Fifth At Mountain View

Mar 22, 2003

Tucson, Ariz. - With a two round 147 at Saturday's Mountain View Collegiate, Colorado senior Erin Kerr is just one stroke from the lead and in position to become CU's first medallist since Kiersten Allbright won the Heather Farr Memorial in 1998 and the Buffs, as a team, are in fifth with a 36 hole total 610.

"She's ready to win and she wants to win. She's in a very good position," said head coach Anne Kelly.

Kerr trails Elaina Condon (72-74) of Nevada and Louise Kinney (74-72) of Iowa State who both carded a 36-hole 146 today on the Saddlebrooke Golf Course.

Kansas State has a three-stroke edge in the team race as the Wildcats shot a 299-290-589 and have Iowa State breathing down there necks as the Cyclones shot 301-291-592.

"Our first round was our best of the spring season," explained Kelly. "We just ran out of gas during the second round which was disappointing. But we're fired up and ready to go for tomorrow."

For the first time this spring Kelly was able to count all 70s in both rounds towards the team score following today's competition, as Maria Persson Gulda continues her race through the spring and coming off a career best 73 in the Oregon Duck Invitational, shot a 75-79-154 today and is in a share of 32nd. A single stroke behind Persson Gulda, Allison Rella carded a 77-78-155 and is in 34th. Joey Stetser is having her strongest spring tournament to date, as she is in 37th with a 79-77-156 scorecard and is just a single stroke ahead of teammate Jolene Fellhauer (77-80-157), whose bad back caught up to her the second round.

Playing as an individual, Robin Worthington carded a career low first round 74 and her second round 84 puts her in a share for 40th with a 36-hole 158.

The third, and final round, will be decided Sunday in an 8 a.m. shotgun start.
