March 23, 2003
SAN DIEGO, CA - The No. 20 Oregon State softball squad split a pair of games on Sunday against the University of San Diego. The Beavers recorded a 5-0 victory in the opener before dropping a 7-3 contest in game-two.
In the opener Oregon State (20-11) got on the board early with a pair of runs in the first inning. San Diego native, Kelly Petersen, blasted an RBI double off the wall in left field that plated Clare Burnum and Shelly Prochaska followed with an RBI single down the right field line, bringing Petersen across the plate.
San Diego (4-22) had a runner reach base in each of the first three innings but was unable to capitalize.
USD hurler Erin Harmonson put the clamps on the Beaver batters, retiring seven in a row and not allowing another hit until Vanessa Iapala's lead-off single in the fifth. The Beavers got out of a jam in the bottom half of the frame, when left fielder Adrienne Alo caught Ashlee Nunes' shot just in front of the wall to end the inning. USD had a pair of runners on base at the time.
OSU extended its lead to 3-0 in the sixth inning when Lisa Allen's bases loaded groundout scored Petersen. The Beavers added two more runs in the seventh, taking advantage of two singles and three batters hit by pitch. Petersen tallied an RBI single and Allen was plunked with the bases loaded to pick up her second RBI of the contest and round out the Beaver scoring.
Oregon State pitcher Monica Hoffman struck out the side to end the contest and improve her record to 14-6 on the season. Hoffman had eight K's in the game and earned her fourth shutout of the year.
The Beavers opened up the second game where they left off in the first. OSU jumped in front 1-0 after Burnum led-off the game with a double to left field and was plated by a double to center field by Brynnen Guthrie.
After that however, the wheels fell off for Oregon State. San Diego batted through its line-up in the bottom half of the inning, taking advantage of three hits, three Beaver errors and a wild pitch to score seven runs. OSU hurler Dena DuBois started in the circle but was relieved by freshman Amy Klever after all six batters she faced reached base, albeit two on errors. The seven runs scored in the frame were the second-most scored by the Toreros in any game this season and the most given up by the Beavers in a single inning.
Oregon State looked to bounce back in the third inning when Guthrie belted a lead-off triple to center field, but failed to score after USD pitcher Gina McFarland retired three straight. The Beavers got two runs back in the fifth inning, capitalizing on singles from Petersen and Steph Adams and a pair of Torero errors, but it wasn't enough.
Petersen finished the day with a 3-for-5 clip from the plate and three runs scored while Guthrie went 4-for-8 and Adams was 2-for-5.Klever allowed just three hits in six innings of relief.
Oregon State returns to action on Monday with a double-header at UC Riverside. Game-one is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
