No. 3 Softball Wins Capital Classic Championship
March 23, 2003
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The No. 3-ranked Washington softball team (31-2-1) struggled with wet weather this morning as its final game of the Capital Classic versus Iowa was cancelled, as was an additional game versus Long Island. The Huskies did, however, earn the tournament title as the only team out of 11 with an undefeated record. UW was also able to get a game in against Utah State in the afternoon and won the match-up, 6-0.
The Huskies jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back as they out hit the Aggies, 13-2. Rita Roach (Norwalk, Calif.) got Washington started in the first by bunting herself on base. With two outs, Kristen Rivera (Perris, Calif.) ripped her 15th home run of the season over the left field wall.
The Dawgs added another run in the third inning, again with two outs. Jaime Clark (Tustin, Calif.) drove a double to the left-centerfield wall and scored on a single up the middle by Kathy Fiske (Temecula, Calif.).
Washington added two more runs in the fifth frame and one more in the sixth. Clark singled up the middle in the fifth and scored on a Rivera double to left-center. Dena Tyson (Corona, Calif.) then singled to centerfield to score Rivera. In the sixth, Aimee Minor (San Jacinto, Calif.) reached base on a fielder's choice, moved to second on a walk and scored on a single to left field by Amy Hanson (Mount Vernon, Calif.).
Junior ace Tia Bollinger (Santa Ana, Calif.) kept Utah State off balance through four innings, striking out five and allowing just one hit. Sophomore hurler Ashley Boek (Redding, Calif.) took over in the fifth inning and proved just as effective, matching Bollinger's five strikeouts to one hit performance.
Roach was named to the Capital Classic all-tournament team as she led the team with a .583 batting average (7-for-12), while scoring six runs.
Washington returns to action next week as it makes its Pac-10 debut at California and Stanford. The Huskies open play at California on March 28 with a 2 p.m. match-up.
