Beavers In 13th at Oregon Duck Invitational

Daren Greig carded a second-round 68 at the Oregon Duck Invitational on Monday, but the Beavers slipped to 13th place after totaling a 594 in Monday's opening two rounds.

Greig opened with a 79 in cold weather at the par-72 Eugene Country Club, but stormed back with the second-lowest score of his career to move into a tie for 30th at 3-over 147.

OSU, which is trying to lock down a berth in the NCAA Regional Championships, trails Stanford by one shot, and is 13 shots back of fourth-place UCLA.

Washington owns a four-shot lead over Arizona with an 8-under 568. UW's Brock Mackenzie leads Oregon's John Ellis by three after carding a whopping 60 in the second round to finish the day at 134.

OSU shot 298 in the first round, when Michael Jurgensen and Kenny Coakley fired 71s. However, Jurgensen finished his day with a 77 and Coakley an 82 as the Beavers struggled to a 296 in the second round.

Jurgensen is tied for 41st at 148, while Coakley's 153 puts him in a tie for 66th, along with teammate Brian Kelley. Kelley shot 77-76.

Sean Deacon rounded out the scoring for the Beavs with a 155.

Competing as an individual, sophomore transfer Chad Sawyer shot a 2-over 146 with rounds of 75 and 71 in his first official competition at OSU.

Cameron MacKenzie, also playing as an individual, shot 73-74--147 in his first official action after sitting out 1 years with a wrist injury.

Though their scores do not count toward the team total, Sawyer is tied for 21st and MacKenzie is tied for 30th.

'With the exception of Daren Greig in the second round, we flat out didn't get the job done today,' OSU coach Brian Watts said. 'We didn't capitalize on any of the advantages we had going into the tournament.

'We just aren't mentally tough right now, and that's something we'll have to work on the rest of the season.'

The tournament concludes with 18 holes Tuesday morning.
