March 24, 2003
SANTA CLARITA, Calif. - -
Sophomore Alex Lucio equaled a career-low with a 74 in Monday's opening round of the UCLA/Pioneer Classic to lead the Beavers to a tie for 10th in the 20-team field.
Lucio is among six golfers tied for eighth, three shots off the pace of leaders Mikaela Parmlid of USC and Washington's Lindsay Morgan. The native of Bogota, Colombia, equaled her career-best for the second time this year with a steady 37-37-74.
OSU and No. 12 Washington are tied after shooting 313 on Monday at the par-72 Robinson Ranch Country Club. OSU and UW are 17 shots back of leader and No. 9 California in a field that features six of the nation's top 25 programs.
Teams are scheduled to play 18 holes Tuesday and Wednesday.
'The course was playing very difficult today,' OSU coach Rise Lakowske said, noting that scores were high among the teams as a whole. 'It's a matter of learning the golf course in terms of where to put the ball off the tee. The pin placements were very tough today as well, but everybody has to play the course.'
