Baseball's Richie Gardner Named Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week
March 25, 2003
TUCSON, Ariz.- Right-hander Richie Gardner has been named the March 25 Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week, the Conference Office announced today.
The junior recently completed a week that saw him go 2-0 with a 1.80 ERA and 17 strikeouts in a pair of starts against New Mexico and USC. Gardner worked a combined 15 innings to improve to a perfect 6-0 for the season.
Against the Lobos in Nogales, Ariz., on Tuesday, he struck out a career-high 12 batters, while limiting UNM to just three runs over seven innings in UA's 5-3 win. Then, pitching on four days rest, he picked up his second win of the week on Sunday with an eight-inning performance against USC. The two-run, five-strikeout outing helped Arizona win a season series over the Trojans for the first time since 1993.
The weekly honor is the first for Gardner in his Arizona career and the third for a Wildcat pitcher this season. Teammate Sean Rierson has also garnered the honor twice this year.
Gardner's pitcher of the week honor is 27th all-time for an Arizona hurler and marks the first time since 1992 that two different Arizona pitchers have been recognized by the conference in the same season.
Gardner and the Wildcats will head to Los Angeles for their first Pac-10 road series of the year against UCLA this Friday through Sunday. Game time for the series opener on Friday is set for 7 p.m. Tucson time. KNST (790-AM) will broadcast both Friday and Sunday's contests live on the radio.
