No. 8 Cal In Third After Second Round of Pioneer Electronic Classic

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. - No. 8 California fell from first to third after shooting a 315 in the second round of the Pioneer Electronic Bruin Classic Tuesday at the Robinson Ranch Golf Course. The Golden Bears are seven strokes back from No. 7 USC (604), which shot a second round low of 300, and two strokes behind No. 1 Pepperdine (609).
Scores were higher in the second round as no team shot below 300 and most teams fired rounds higher than 315. Cal is in pursuit of its fifth tournament title this season and second this spring.
Rounding out the top five teams at the 20-team competitive tournament hosted by UCLA are New Mexico (613) and UCLA's B team (620) and Texas Tech (620).
San Jose State's Ashley Gomes took over the individual race at plus-two 146 after carding a 69 today. USC's Mikaela Parmlid and Washington's Lindsay Morgan, the first day leaders, are one shot off the pace.
Senior Vikki Laing leads the way for Cal in a tie for 11th at plus-eight 152, firing a second round of 78. Junior Sarah Huarte dropped from third to a tie for 21st at 154 following her round of 72 with an 82. Also for the Bears, freshmen Sophia Sheridan and Mika Takayama share a tie for 25th (155), with Takayama shooting a team low of 76 in round two. Senior Ria Quiazon is tied for 30th at 156.
The final round begins Wednesday at 8 a.m. with a shot gun start.
