March 26, 2003
Los Angeles - The UCLA women's rowing team competes against its marina rival, Loyola Marymount, on Saturday, March 29, in Marina del Rey, CA, in the 3rd Annual Karen Hock-Hjelm Cup. The Bruins will not only battle the Lions for the coveted trophy but also the rights to Ballona Creek.
The Karen Hock-Hjelm Cup honors former elite Lion alumni rower, Karen Hock-Hjelm. Loyola Marymount has claimed the trophy both years since its founding in 2001.
The Bruins have four crews set to compete this weekend, two varsity eights and two novice eights. The first race of the morning is the Women's Novice Eights at 8:30 a.m., and the Women's Varsity Eights are scheduled to compete at 9:00 a.m. The trophy presentation will commence at 9:45 a.m.
A Look at the Opponent
The duel versus UCLA will be LMU's third official event of the season. The Lions have already competed at the Parker Cup and the West Coast Conference (WCC) Challenge.
The LMU varsity eight captured the 2003 Parker Cup (Mar. 10 - Newport Beach, Calif.) by defeating UC Irvine and San Diego State.
At the WCC Challenge (Mar. 17-18 - Redwood Shores, Calif.), Loyola Marymount dueled Sacramento State, Santa Clara, St. Mary's, and Gonzaga. The Lion varsity eight posted a victory over Santa Clara and were handed losses by Sacramento State and Gonzaga. The varsity race against St. Mary's was scratched. Loyola Marymount's dual-meet record is currently 1-2.
The Bruins captured the 2003 Berg Cup (Mar. 22 - Newport Beach, Calif.) with a victory in the varsity race. The Bruin novices also posted victories in their races, and the UCLA 2V8 placed second, only 2-seconds behind the University of San Diego.
The 2003 Berg Cup marks UCLA's first regatta victory since it became a scholarship sport last year.
