This Week -- The USC men's tennis team (10-5, 0-1 Pac-10) resumes Pac-10 play this week as it travels to face No. 48 Arizona State (5-8, 1-0 Pac-10) and No. 40 Arizona (5-6, 0-0 Pac-10). The Trojans face the Sun Devils on Friday, March 28, at 1:30 p.m. MST, then travel to Tucson to face the Wildcats on Saturday, March 29, at noon MST. Both matches will count against Pac-10 records.* USC is coming off a 6-1 win over Utah last week.

* This week's matches against Arizona and Arizona will count against conference records. Only the second of two meetings against Pac-10 teams during the season (except Oregon, which USC faces only once) count against Pac-10 records.

USC claimed the program's 16th national title in 2002. The Trojans did lose three seniors (Andrew Park, Ryan Moore and Nick Rainey), who made up the top of last year's lineup, but returned NCAA Tournament MVP Prakash Amritraj and all-tournament selections Daniel Langre and Ruben Torres. This season, the three have also been aided by top transfer Johan Berg.

ITA Ranking Updates -- The Trojans dropped to 28th in the latest ITA poll released on March 26. In the individual singles rankings, Prakash Amritraj improved to No. 34 and Johan Berg is ranked No. 80. Amritraj and Daniel Langre are ranked No. 17 in doubles.

USC vs. Arizona State -- The Trojans boast a 46-6 all-time record against the Sun Devils. USC won the first match-up this season, 6-1, in Los Angeles on Feb. 15.

USC vs. Arizona -- Arizona has only beat the Trojans once in the 69-year history of the series. USC owns a 81-1 all-time record and defeated the Wildcats in the first meeting, 6-1, on Feb. 14.

Last Week -- USC posted its most convincing win of the last four weeks by defeating Utah, 6-1, on March 22. The Trojans won all three doubles matches to start the afternoon and held the Utes to just five total points. The Trojans also won 5-of-6 singles matches in dominating fashion. Prakash Amritraj defeated Daniel Lohff, 6-4, 6-2, Johan Berg beat Roeland Brateanu, 6-1, 6-4, Daniel Langre got past Tyler Poulson, 6-3, 6-3, Parker Collins defeated Nick Coutts, 6-3, 6-4, and Jeff Kazarian posted a 6-3, 6-4 decision over Kaisorn Chaichana.

Head Coach Peter Smith in First Season -- Peter Smith, who guided the Pepperdine men's tennis team to conference titles and NCAA tournament appearances in each of his five years there, is in his first year at the helm of the USC men's tennis program. Smith's collegiate coaching career includes five years (1998-2002) at Pepperdine, six years at Fresno State (1992-1997) and four years at Long Beach State (1988-1991). He boasts a 280-140 (.667) overall record and has led his teams to nine NCAA appearances and seven top 20 finishes. Last season he earned his sixth conference Coach of the Year honor (WCC) and was named the ITA Region VIII Coach of the Year.
