No. 22 Softball Drops A Pair Of Games To San Diego State

March 26, 2003

SAN DIEGO, CA - Despite a 3-for-4 effort and three walk performance from senior Brynnen Guthrie, the No. 22 Oregon State softball squad dropped a pair of games to San Diego State on Wednesday afternoon, 3-0 and 2-1.

In the opener Oregon State (22-13) started quickly with Clare Burnum and Guthrie tallying back-to-back hits and Kelly Petersen's sacrifice moving both runners into scoring position. SDSU (22-14) pitcher Celena Velasquez settled in from there on however, retiring the next two batters to end the threat and eventually retiring nine in a row until Petersen reached on an error in the fourth.

The Aztecs got on the board in the second inning when Jennifer Funk belted a two-out RBI single to left field. SDSU led off the frame with a single up the middle by Danielle Touhey and pinch runner Lindsey Dismuke eventually scored.

San Diego State added two more runs in the third inning, taking advantage of three hits and getting its first three batters on base.

The Beavers looked to mount a comeback in the sixth inning when Burnum led-off the frame with a double to centerfield and Guthrie followed with a bunt single. The middle of the line-up faltered though and OSU was unable to get on the board.

Oregon State starter Monica Hoffman had retired eight straight before Lacey Craft walked in the bottom of the sixth but the Aztecs were unable to capitalize.

OSU got two runners on base in the seventh on singles from Lisa Allen and Cara Maxey, but was unable to score.

Hoffman dropped to 16-7 on the season with the loss, despite striking out three and allowing just six hits.

Guthrie gave the Beavers a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game-two when she belted her third home run of the season in a shot the sailed over the right field fence.

Hoffman earned her second start of the day, keeping the Aztecs in check for the first two innings but SDSU came up big with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third. San Diego State capitalized on a trio of hits, garnering a 2-1 advantage when Jacque Vaca belted a two-out RBI single up the middle.

Allen kept OSU's hopes alive in the seventh inning when she reached base on an infield hit - just Oregon State's second of the game, but SDSU pitcher Bre DeSanta retired the next two batters to end the contest.

OSU managed just two hits in the game but left 12 runners stranded on base and was unable to capitalize on eight walks and two hit batters.

Hoffman suffered her second loss of the day, falling to 16-8, while allowing six hits in five innings of work. Freshman Amy Klever entered the game in relief in the sixth inning.

Oregon State continues road action on Friday when the Beavers travel to No. 3 University of Arizona. The Pacific-10 Conference tilt is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
