Richardson and Powell Lead Multi-Events After First Day at Davis

DAVIS, Calif. -- Washington State's Ellannee Richardson is leading the heptathlon and Cougar teammate Darion Powell is leading the decathlon after the first day's events at the UC Multi-Events Meet at Woody Wilson Track at Davis Wednesday.
Richardson reached a personal-best first day total of 3,422 points for first place among the 13 competitors in Flight B after four events. The redshirt senior from Gladstone, Ore., is the two-time defending Pac-10 heptathlon champion and a three-time All-American in the heptathlon. Richardson had the top times of the day in the 100m hurdles (13.75 seconds) and 200m dash (23.91). She was tied for second in the high jump with a clearance of 5-feet, 6 inches (1.68m) but finished eighth in the shot put with a toss of 35-9 1/4 (10.90m).
Missy Vanek, formerly of University of California, Berkeley now competing unattached, was second with 3,317 points. Cougar freshmen Diana Pickler and Julie Pickler were third and fourth respectively after the first day. Diana Pickler scored 3,288 points (100m hurdles - 14.06, high jump - 5-6/1.68m, shot put - 37-1/11.30m, 200m - 25.15) while Julie racked up 3,178 points (100m hurdles - 14.48, high jump - 5-6/1.68m, shot put - 35-6/10.82m, 200m - 25.37).
Powell, a redshirt freshman from Kirkland, Wash., scored 3,967 points in the first five events. He had the top times among the ten competitors in Flight A with personal-record times for both the 100m (11.09 seconds) and the 400m (50.02). Powell also had a lifetime PR in long jump (23-8 3/4 /7.23m) and a season-PR in the high jump (6-2/1.88m). He threw just four inches under his PR in the shot put with a heave of 46-11 (14.30m).
Andy Geisler, a Clemson grad now competing for Oakley, is in second place after five events with 3,890 points.
The UC Multi-Events competition concludes Thursday with the women competing in the long jump, javelin and 800m. Second-day events for the men are the 110m hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw, and the 1500m run.
