UCLA Swimming and Diving Places 11th at NCAA Championships

At the conclusion of the season, UCLA, the 2003 Pac-10 Championships, placed 11th at the NCAA Championships. The Bruins (5-4 overall, 2-4 Pac-10) were ranked 12th in the final regular season College Swim Coaches of Association poll (2/27/03), receiving 112 votes.
The Bruins scored 128 points and placed 11th at the NCAA Championships, held in Auburn, AL. The top individual performers were freshman Kim Vandenberg and juniors Sara Platzer and Malin Svahnstrom and senior Regan Gosnell. Vandenberg was the highest placing Bruin at the Championships, placing fifth in the 200 Fly (1:57.15). Gosnell placed eighth on platform (396.90), 15th on three-meter (475.35) and 20th on one-meter (254.65). Platzer placed 10th in the 100 Free (49.48) and 11th in the 50 Free (22.77). And, Svahnstrom 11th in the 200 Free (1:47.53) and 12th in the 200 IM (2:00.02).
Nine Bruins earned All-America honors at the NCAA Championships. They are Platzer (50/100 Free, 200/400 Free Relay, 200/400 Medley Relay), Svahnstrom (200 IM/Free, 200/400 Free Relay), Vandenberg (200 Fly, 200/400 Free Relay), Erica Shugart (200 Free Relay), Taylor Spivey (200 Back, 200/400 Medley Relay), Leslie Hovsepian (200/400 Medley Relay), Kristen Lewis (200 Fly, 200/400 Medley Relay), Regan Gosnell (three-meter, platform) and Lindsey Smart (400 Free Relay).

The Bruins won their second conference title in three years, scoring 1,399 points for the victory. Runner-up Stanford scored 1,308 points and third-place USC tallied 1,138 points. UCLA is just one of three schools, Arizona and Stanford are the other two, to win the Pac-10 title.
The title is UCLA's second women's swimming and diving Pac-10 Title. Both titles (2001, 2003) have been won under the guidance of head swimming coach Cyndi Gallagher and head diving coach Tom Stebbins.
