Q &A with Head Coach Bill Ryden
March 27, 2003
Q: With the Pac-10 Championships coming up, what do you expect from the other conference teams and your Arizona team in this competition?
A: 'I expect it to be a great competition, because every team is ranked in the top-20. It will certainly be a good meet. Last week our team had a tough meet, but I expect us to bounce back and compete as normal.'
Q: This year's team has had to deal with a lot more injuries compared to last year, yet the team has a higher RQS then last year. What are your thoughts on this?
A: 'We are a good team. We have lost so much injury wise, it makes you wonder where we could be if we did not have so many injuries. It is a testament of the fight and the sheer confidence and stubbornness of this team.'
Q: The team set the all-time record in a meet against Oklahoma this year. What made that night so memorable?
A: 'The fact that we were able to put up a score like that while losing one of our gymnasts early in the competition. Mentally the team could have gone downhill from there, but they didn't let that happen.'
Q: The team is set to compete in its 17th consecutive NCAA Regional. How do you prepare for that meet?
A: 'In the postseason, the judging is different then the regular season. We have always based our routines on the postseason, but we are even making changes now thinking about the postseason. We have to decide whether or not to use a certain lineups.'
Q: There have been many improvements and additions to the McKale Center and to the UA campus. How do these changes benefit the team?
A: 'I think it is great. It shows the quality of the athletic department and this university, and their sincerity in being a first-class institution. We are very lucky to be involved with a quality university like the UA.'
Q: Monica Bisordi has put up some great numbers this year. What makes her so consistent?
A: 'Monica is emotionally consistent. She is never too high, or never too low. She is almost like a machine at work. She can just put up those scores without psyching up. She never has any let downs, because she is mentally consistent in her preparation for each meet.
Q: What other Arizona gymnasts have shown improvement throughout the 2003 season?
A: 'One of the remarkable improvement stories this year is Jamie Duce. She is significantly better then she was last year. And that is just a testament to her work ethic. She is better at everything this year compared to last year, and I couldn't be happier with her improvement. Our team has benefited from her hard work.'
Q: Your meet against California was nationally televised. How does that exposure help your program?
A: 'It does help. It gets our names and pictures out in front of potential recruits. It is nice to get noticed and to be seen throughout the country.'
