Richardson Wins Heptathlon at UC Multi-Events Meet

March 27, 2003

DAVIS, Calif. -- Washington State's Ellannee Richardson lead a first, third and fourth Cougars finish in the heptathlon while teammate Darion Powell was runner-up in the decathlon at the UC Multi-Events Meet at Woody Wilson Track at Davis Thursday.

Richardson finished the seven-event competition with 5,701 points (NCAA Automatic Qualifier), followed by Missy Vanek (unattached) in second with 5,604 points. WSU freshmen Diana Pickler finished third with 5,120 points, and her twin sister Julie Pickler was fourth with 5,024 points. All three have qualified for the Pac-10 Championships in May.

Richardson had reached a personal-best first day total of 3,422 points Wednesday, but the redshirt senior from Gladstone, Ore., had to fight stiff winds in the three events Thursday. She had the top mark among the dozen competitors in the long jump at 18-feet, 9 3/4 inches (5.73m) but faltered in the javelin with a toss of 125-3 (38.19m), well below her personal-record of 150-1. Richardson, a two-time defending Pac-10 heptathlon champion and a three-time heptathlon All-American, finished the day with the top 800m time of 2:16.02. She was well-below her school record of 5,821 set last season at the Pac-10 Championships.

Diana Pickler leaped 18-5 3/4 in the long jump, threw the javelin 121-7 and ran the 800m in 2:48.14. Julie Pickler reached 18-4 1/4 in the long jump, threw the javelin 118-10 and finished the 800m in a time of 2:44.25.

Powell, a redshirt freshman from Kirkland, Wash., scored 7,243 points, well behind winner Andy Geisler (Oakley Club Team) at 7,601 points. Powell's first collegiate decathlon is an NCAA Provisional Qualifying mark and qualified him for the Pac-10 Championships.

Powell lead the eight-competitors after the first day but gusting winds marred his second day events. Thursday he ran the top time in the 110m hurdles at 14.69 seconds, threw the discus 118-7 (36.15m), pole vaulted 13-9 1/4 (4.20m), threw the javelin 169-11 (51.79m) and ran the 1500m in a time of 5:08.05.

The multi-events athletes will meet the select team of men and women from Washington State competing Friday and Saturday at the Stanford Invitational Meet.
