Cal Baseball Loses at Oregon State, 8-6
March 28, 2003
CORVALLIS, OR - Senior right fielder Ben Conley hit two home runs and starting pitcher Matt Brown had nine strikeouts in 7.3 innings, but it was too little, too late as Cal lost to Oregon State, 8-6, Friday night at Coleman Field in Corvallis, OR. The Bears go to 15-13 overall and 2-2 in the Pac-10, while the Beavers improved to 13-11 and 1-0 in league play.
Cal had fallen behind, 5-0 after six innings, but battled back to get within 5-4. The Bears scored two runs in the seventh inning on Conley's two-run homer, and then scored twice more in the eighth inning on a bases loaded walk by junior third baseman Conor Jackson and an RBI single by junior catcher Chris Grossman. Cal had a chance to do more damage in the eighth, but James Holder grounded into a double play on a ball hit down the third base line to end the inning.
Oregon State came back to score three times in the bottom of the eighth when Bear reliever Mike Padgett gave up a RBI double to pinch hitter Levi Webber and a two-run single to Brad Mellinger. However, Cal was not done threatening. Conley led off the top of the ninth inning by hitting his second home run of the game. Then after Nick Medrano grounded out to second base, Justin Nelson hit a solo home run to right to get the Bears within, 8-6. Jeff Dragicevich followed with a double to right center field, but OSU reliever Jared Sanders got David Nicholson to ground out to third and Brad Smith flew out to deep left field to end the game.
The winning pitcher for Oregon State was starter Ben Rowe (3-1), who threw 7.0 innings with five hits, three runs, one walk and four strikeouts. The Beavers Sanders earned his third save of the season. The losing pitcher was Brown (2-3), who threw 7.3 innings with seven hits, six earned runs, four walks and a season-high nine strikeouts. Cal out hit OSU, 11-9.
Besides Conley's two home runs, Nicholson, Holder and Dragicevich had two hits apiece for the Bears. Holder and Dragicevich each had a double for Cal as well. Seth Pietsch hit a lead-off home run in the second inning for the Beavers, and Chris Biles, Chris Kunda and Paul Richie all hit triples for OSU.
