No. 13 Arizona State Edges No. 19 Oregon Softball, 2-0

March 28, 2003

TEMPE, Ariz. - The 13th-ranked Arizona State Sun Devils scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to defeat No. 19 Oregon, 2-0, at Farrington Stadium in Tempe, Ariz., Friday evening. With the win, Arizona State improves to 24-9 overall, 1-0 Pacific-10 Conference while Oregon drops to 17-7, 1-1.

'I'm disappointed because I feel like this is a game we should have won,' Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. 'We are continuing to pitch well and we had chances to win. I'm pleased that we continued to battle late in the game after we were down, getting hits and opportunities, but we just came up a little short today.'

Both teams were held scoreless through four innings in what had become a pitchers dual. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Arizona State put runners on second and third after a hit each by Jenn Forner and Kara Brun as well as a sacrifice fly to deep center field by Phelan Wright. The Sun Devils scored both runners on an Oregon error to take a 2-0 lead and held on through the sixth and seventh innings for the win.

Arizona State pitcher Desi Serrano improved to 15-5 this season while Oregon freshman Amy Harris (6-5) picked up the loss. Harris had seven strikeouts in the game and allowed no earned runs.

Oregon sophomore Erin Goodell, seniors Alyssa Laux and Lynsey Haij and freshman Beth Boskovich each accounted for a hit in the loss.

The Ducks continue Pac-10 play Saturday against No. 3 Arizona in Tucson at 6 p.m.
