Bruins Defeat Loyola Marymount in Marina Rivalry

March 29, 2003

Marina del Rey, Calif. - The UCLA women's rowing team competed against marina rival, Loyola Marymount, today for the Karen Hock-Hjelm Cup in Ballona Creek. The Bruins swept both the varsity and novice races to improve their dual meet records to 2-0. With the victory in the varsity race, the Bruins captured the Karen Hock-Hjelm Cup for the first time since its founding in 2001 and improved the series to 1-2.

In the Women's Novice Eights, the UCLA N8 squad maintained the lead from the start. Passing the boathouse (1250m), they had commanding open water advantage, and the Bruins would go on to win handily in 6:49.3. The real race, though, was for second place. At about 1250 meters into the race, Loyola Marymount had a three-seat advantage over the UCLA 2N8 boat, but the Bruin second novice eight (7:17.3) came from behind to finish second. Loyola Marymount followed for third in 7:20.1.

For the Karen Hock-Hjelm Cup, the varsity crews put up a close race, but UCLA would come out with the victory. The UCLA V8 crew maintained a six-seat advantage over LMU as they passed the UCLA Boathouse. They went on to win the race by 4-seconds in 6:29.7 to claim the Karen Hock-Hjelm Cup for 2003. Loyola Marymount finished second in 6:33.3, and the UCLA 2V8 boat finished third in 7:02.5.
