Women's Rowing Falls To Washington State

March 29, 2003

DEXTER, Ore. - Oregon State was defeated by Washington State in the third annual Winchell Cup Saturday in a rare home dual meet for the Beavers' women's rowing team at Dexter Reservoir near Eugene. OSU's lone win on the day came in the novice four race.

'Washington State is a very good crew and we look forward to racing them over the course of the season,' Oregon State head coach Charlie Owen said. 'We are not quite where we need to be. We have a big race at San Diego next weekend and we'll be looking at making some changes between now and then.'

Oregon State's novice four completed the 2,000-meter race in eight minutes, 12.81 seconds to beat the Cougars, who finished with a time of 8:15.15. Races were delayed about 45 minutes due to rough water.

Washington State, coached by former Oregon State assistant Jane LaRiviere, won both varsity eight races and the second novice eight by comfortable margins. The Cougars grabbed the top two spots in the varsity four race.

In the varsity eight men's race, Oregon State's second varsity finished first with a time of 6:07.71 and OSU's freshmen eight placed second at 6:09.51. Washington State was third at 6:26.20.

'I'm optimistic that we'll be more prepared for San Diego than we were today,' Owen said. 'We can't go against fast crews that are ready to race and not be prepared because we'll get results like today.'

Races at the San Diego Crew Classic April 5 and 6 will include the first and second varsity and first novice. OSU's third varsity and second novice will participate in the Husky Invitational in Seattle on April 5.
