No. 19 Softball Falls, 8-0, To No. 2 Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. - The second-ranked Wildcats used 13 hits to defeat No. 19 Oregon 8-0 in six innings in front of 1,159 fans at Hillenbrand Stadium in Tucson, Ariz., Sunday afternoon. Arizona improved to 34-3 overall, 3-0 Pacific-10 Conference while Oregon fell to 17-9, 1-3 after the loss.

Arizona freshman Alicia Hallowell (21-2) picked up her third win in as many days while Oregon junior Anissa Meashintubby (3-2) picked up the loss.

Arizona took an early 1-0 lead after the first inning in which Autumn Champion led off with an infield single. Champion advanced to second when Courtney Fossatti was thrown out at first base for the first out of the inning. Lovieanne Jung advanced Champion to third with a single to shallow right field and Champion scored on a sacrifice fly by Arizona clean-up hitter Mackenzie Vandergeest.

Arizona shortstop Lovieanne Jung and third baseman Jackie Coburn each hit a solo home run in the bottom of the third inning to give the Wildcats a 3-0 lead. Oregon sophomore pitcher Lindsey Kontra replaced junior Anissa Meashintubby in the inning and forced two Wildcat groundouts to end the inning.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Arizona added two more runs after Jung scored Champion with an RBI single to shallow right field and Vandergeest hit her second sacrifice fly of the game to score Fossatti and give the Wildcats a 5-0 lead heading into the fifth inning.

Oregon third baseman Julie Jaime led off the fifth inning with a single down the left field line and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Breanne Sabol. Jaime advanced to third when Amber Hutchinson was out at first on a infield hit back to Arizona second baseman Lisha Ribellia. Jaime was unable to score as the Wildcats secured the third out in Oregon's next at bat.

Arizona's lead grew in the sixth inning when Wendy Allen and Michelle Schultz each led off with a single. Meashintubby returned to the game for Kontra after the two hits and walked Ribellia to load the bases. Meashintubby secured the first out of the inning, striking out Allyson Von Liechenstein in Arizona's next at bat. Champion was then out at first base for the second out, but Allen scored on the play to give the Wildcats a 6-0 lead.

The Wildcats added two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to end the game.

Oregon catcher Jenn Poore had the Ducks' first hit of the game in the top of the second inning and sophomore Erin Goodell accounted for Oregon's second hit of the game in the top of the third inning.
