Men's Tennis Hosts San Diego, Travels To Bay Area

This Week -- Coming off a split in the desert, the USC men's tennis team (11-6, 1-2 Pac-10) prepares for three matches this week. The Trojans host No. 35 San Diego (11-5) on Tuesday, April 2, at 1:30 p.m. at Marks Tennis Stadium, then travel to the Bay Area to face No. 4 California (14-2, 2-0 Pac-10) and No. 7 Stanford (14-2, 2-0 Pac-10). USC faces the Bears on Friday, April 4, at 1:30 p.m. and the Cardinal on Saturday, April 5, at noon. The Trojans are coming off a 4-3 loss at No. 48 Arizona State and 4-3 victory over No. 40 Arizona last week.

* This week's matches against California and Stanford will not count against conference records. Only the second of two meetings against Pac-10 teams during the season (except Oregon, which USC faces only once) count against Pac-10 records.

ITA Ranking Updates -- The Trojans moved six spots to No. 22 in the latest ITA poll released on March 31. In the individual singles rankings, Prakash Amritraj is ranked 34th and Johan Berg is ranked No. 80. Amritraj and Daniel Langre are ranked No. 17 in doubles. Singles and doubles rankings will be updated on April 7.

USC vs. San Diego -- USC owns a 23-2 all-time record against San Diego. The last match-up between these two teams took place in 2002 when the Trojans swept the Toreros, 7-0, in Los Angeles.

USC vs. California -- Friday's match will be the 146th meeting between USC and Cal. The Trojans are 117-28 against the Golden Bears and split last season, beating the Bears 4-3 at home, but falling 5-1 on the road.

USC vs. Stanford -- USC and Stanford have met a total of 157 times since the series began in 1925. The Trojans own an 90-67 all-time edge against the Cardinal and last year swept the two regular season match-ups for the first time since 1994.

News N' Notes -- Sophomore Prakash Amritraj boasts the team's best singles record this season with a 13-3 (.813) overall mark and 12-2 (.857) record in dual matches.. his only losses have been to higher ranked opponents. *** Amritraj and redshirt junior Daniel Langre are each riding a four-match singles win streak heading into this week.

Head Coach Peter Smith in First Season -- Peter Smith, who guided the Pepperdine men's tennis team to conference titles and NCAA tournament appearances in each of his five years there, is in his first year at the helm of the USC men's tennis program. Smith's collegiate coaching career includes five years (1998-2002) at Pepperdine, six years at Fresno State (1992-1997) and four years at Long Beach State (1988-1991). He boasts a 281-141 (.666) overall record and has led his teams to nine NCAA appearances and seven top 20 finishes. Last season he earned his sixth conference Coach of the Year honor (WCC) and was named the ITA Region VIII Coach of the Year.
