Rowing Heads to San Diego for 30th Annual Crew Classic
April 2, 2003
Los Angeles, CA - The USC women's rowing team travels to San Diego this week for the 30th Annual San Diego Crew Classic held at Mission Bay on Saturday and Sunday, April 5-6. The Women of Troy's Varsity Eight boat, which won the Crew Classic's Jessop Whittier Cup in 2001, is looking to build on its early success this season.
The two-day event kicks off Saturday at 7 a.m. and concludes on Sunday at 3 p.m., with over 3,000 competitors ranging from juniors to masters to Olympians. The San Diego Crew Classic is the largest multi-laned regatta for Eights in the United States.
The Trojans are scheduled to compete in the women's Varsity Eight, JV Eight and Novice Eight. The preliminary heats will take place at 7:20 a.m., 10:20 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., respectively. The San Diego Crew Classic marks the first outing for the novice boat this season.
The top qualifiers from Saturday's races will compete in the grand finals on Sunday, while the second group of top times will advance to the Petite Finals for places 7-12.
Last season, USC's Varsity Eight boat finished seventh in the field by winning the Petite Final on Sunday. The Novice boat finished an unprecedented fourth in its opening heat to advance to the Petite Finals and placed 12th overall. The JV Eight finished sixth in the opening race and did not advance.
The Varsity Eight is coming off a dominant performance at last week's Windermere Crew Classic. The Women of Troy won all three of their races against Ohio State, Virginia and Michigan State. The JV Eight defeated Ohio State, but fell to Virginia and Michigan State, while the Varsity Four boat finished second in all three races.
