Huskies Clock Season-Best Times at Texas Relays

April 4, 2003

AUSTIN, Texas - Washington athletes clocked season-bests in three of four events Friday on the third day of competition at the prestigious Texas Relays. The four-day meet, featuring over 5,000 athletes in 125 events, began Thursday and concludes Saturday.

Leading the charge for Washington on Friday was the men's 4x400-meter relay team of Sean Williams, Nik Williams, Cristian Adams and Greg Forni. The relay clocked a season-best time of 3 minutes, 15.72 seconds in the event that was just four seconds shy of the NCAA Regional Championships standard. The team finished seventh in its preliminary heat, and was seven seconds behind the top preliminary mark of 3:08.30, clocked by Stanford.

Both Sean Williams and Nik Williams also competed on the UW's sprint medley relay, which placed fourth in its heat, and 12th overall, with a time of 3:24.95. The two were joined by freshmen Brenton Laws and Ryan Brown. Texas Tech clocked the fastest sprint medley relay time, finishing in 3:14.09.

Also Friday, freshman Nick Verbon and junior Marc James made their Texas Relays debuts, posting nearly identical times of 15.02 and 15.04 seconds, respectively, in their heats of the 110-meter hurdles. Neither hurdler qualified for Saturday's final in the event, with the last of nine qualifying spots going to Wichita State's Shannon Armstrong, who finished in 14.22 seconds. Texas A&M's Chris Pinnock was the top qualifier, in 13.70 seconds.

Simultaneously, on the track's opposite straightaway, freshman Brynne Steward placed sixth in her heat of the women's 100-meter hurdles, clocking a time of 14.91 seconds. Steward's time was not quite fast enough to earn a spot in Saturday's final, with LSU's Lolo Jones setting the pace at 13.05 seconds.

On Thursday, junior Brad Goodrich ran a Pac-10 qualifying time of 53.50 seconds in a preliminary heat of the men's 400-meter hurdles.

Washington will close out Texas Relays competition on Saturday, with senior Brad Walker taking to the air in the men's pole vault, freshman Kate Soma competing in the women's pole vault, and junior Brittiny Roberts in the triple jump.
