No. 2 Arizona Blanks No. 3 Washington Softball

SEATTLE. - The third-ranked Washington softball team (32-5-1, 1-3 Pac-10) dropped its home opener against No. 2 Arizona (35-3, 4-0), 3-0, this afternoon as Arizona hurler Alicia Hollowell held the Huskies to just two hits.

The Wildcats took the early lead in the top of the first inning with a pair of runs on two hits and an error. UA loaded the bases with an infield single by Courtney Fossati, a walk to Lovieanne Jung and a Husky error. Jackie Coburn then hit a single into shallow right centerfield to score two.

Arizona added an insurance run in the top of the sixth frame on two hits and a stolen base. Coburn led off the inning with a single up the middle and a sacrifice bunt and single by Lisha Ribellia advanced pinch runner Allyson Von Lichenstein to third. With two outs, Ribellia got in a run down after attempting to steal second and Von Lichenstein scored.

Hollowell held Washington to two hits on the afternoon, including a bunt single by Rita Roach (Norwalk, Calif.) in the first inning and a scorcher by Sarah Hyatt (Sedro-Woolley, Wash.) to left field in the fifth. Hollowell (22-2) earned her 22nd win of the season behind a 12-strikeout performance.

Tia Bollinger (Santa Ana, Calif.) took the loss for the Huskies as she scattered seven hits and struck out six batters. She is now 17-4 on the season.

Washington hosts No. 12 Arizona State for two games this weekend, including a 2 p.m., game on Saturday and a 1 p.m., match-up on Sunday. The Sun Devils (26-10, 3-1 Pac-10) lost to No. 1 UCLA, 6-0, today.
