Kaleo Eldredge Leads No. 7 Cal Past No. 21 Oregon, 4-0

April 5, 2003

Sophomore Kaleo Eldredge batted 2-for-3 and drove in all four runs to help lead the seventh-ranked California softball team to a 4-0 victory Saturday afternoon against Pac-10 foe No. 21 Oregon. Sophomore hurler Kelly Anderson tossed her seventh shutout of the season to improve the Golden Bears' record to 31-9 (3-2 Pac-10) as the Ducks fall to 18-10 (2-4 Pac-10) for the season.

The Bears collected their first two runs with two outs in the third inning, loading the bases off singles from third baseman Vicky Galindo and catcher Courtney Scott, and first baseman Veronica Nelson's second intentional walk of the day. Eldredge roped a line drive base hit to left field, scoring both Galindo and Scott to give the Bears an early 2-0 lead.

Eldredge handed the Bears two insurance runs in the fifth, sailing the pitch to the center field wall, scoring left fielder Lindsay James and Nelson who reach base on singles, for her fourth double of the season and eventual final score of 4-0.

The Ducks managed to scatter two hits off Anderson, as the righty dominated Oregon's bats, allowing just two walks and fanning seven batters. Oregon's starter, Amy Harris, suffered the loss, tossing 2.2 innings, allowing three hits, two earned runs, two walks and one strikeout.

Oregon's best scoring opportunity came in the second with one out, loading the bases off a walk, error and a hit, but were unable to drive in a run as Anderson retired the side with a strikeout and a ground out.

California, the defending national champions, has won 19 of its last 22 games. Today, the Bears out-hit the Ducks eight to two, leaving eight runners on base to five.

California looks for a Pac-10 weekend sweep tomorrow, hosting Oregon Sunday at 1 p.m. at Levine-Fricke Field.
