Oregon State Hands Stanford 15-5 Loss In Nine Innings

Stanford, Calif. - For the second straight night the 13th-ranked Stanford softball team fell in extra innings, this time Oregon State erupted for 10 runs in the top of the ninth to record a 15-5 win over the Cardinal on Saturday night at the Smith Family Stadium. Stanford falls to 27-14 overall and 1-4 in the Pac-10, while the Beavers move to 25-17 and 1-5 in league action heading into tomorrow's 1 p.m. contest.
Oregon State jumped out to a 3-0 lead to start the game, but Catalina Morris (Sonoita, AZ) smashed a solo home run to make it 3-1. Laura Severson (Frankfort, IL) came in to relieve Stanford starter Tori Nyberg (Belmont, CA) and pitched out of a jam in the third inning to hold the score.
Stanford then got four hits that resulted in two runs and a tied ball game in the bottom of the third. Jessica Allister (Nacogdoches, TX) and Elizabeth Bendig (Santa Ana, CA) each recorded RBI singles to tie the game at 3-3.
The Beavers regained the lead in the sixth off of Kelly Petersen's two-run home run to make it 5-3 Oregon State. The Cardinal did not give up and tied the game in the bottom of the seventh inning. Cassi Brangham (Clovis, CA) drilled her second homer of the year, also scoring Lauren Lappin (Anaheim, CA) who had earlier doubled to send the game into extra innings.
The Cardinal had a chance to win in the eighth with runners at second and third with one out, but could not get a run across. Oregon State then exploded for 10 runs off of eight hits, including two home runs, to take a 15-5 victory.
Amy Klever got the win for the Beavers, improving to 6-4. Severson took the loss, falling to 3-2. Bendig led the way offensively for Stanford with three hits, while Morris, Lappin, Brangham and Allister each collected two.
Stanford and Oregon State will battle tomorrow at the Smith Family Stadium in a 1 p.m. contest to finish the weekend.
