Bruins Complete Weekend at San Diego Crew Classic

Mission Bay, Calif. - The UCLA women's rowing team competed in the grand finals today at the 30th Annual San Diego Crew Classic Regatta. The UCLA women's novice eight placed third in the Women's Collegiate Novice Grand Final for the Sea World San Diego Trophy, and the UCLA varsity eight finished fifth in the Women's Cal Cup Grand Final.
In the Women's Collegiate Novice Grand Final, the UCLA novice eight faced Washington State, Oregon State, Washington, Texas, and California, for the top six places narrowed down from a field of 21 novice crews. The Bruins took an early advantage and led the pack for more than half the race. With 500 meters remaining, Washington State was the leader, with UCLA less than a second behind, but Washington and Oregon State were also challenging for the lead. Washington State (7:01.70), Oregon State (7:02.76), and UCLA (7:03.82) battled in the final sprint, but the Bruins caught a crab in the final few strokes and would finish third. Washington State would hold off Oregon State to win the Sea World San Diego Trophy. Washington (7:04.58) would finish fourth, followed by Texas (7:07.55), and California (7:09.02).
In the Women's Cal Cup Grand Final, the UCLA varsity eight faced West Virginia, Loyola Marymount, University of San Diego, Louisville, and Gonzaga, for the top six places narrowed down from a field of 21 varsity crews. After the first 500 meters, UCLA (in lane 1) was in third, only one second behind Louisville and LMU. At the halfway point, Loyola Marymount was the leader, followed by Louisville. West Virginia, challenging for the lead, was in third, dropping the Bruins to fourth place. With 500 meters remaining, it was LMU, West Virginia, Louisville, UCLA, and USD all within 2-seconds, but West Virginia (6:57.00) surged in the final sprint to win the Women's Cal Cup. Loyola Marymount placed second (6:57.25), USD placed third (6:58.35), followed by Louisville (6:58.53), UCLA (7:01.12), and Gonzaga (7:03.75).
