No. 7 Cal Completes Weekend Sweep, Defeats No. 21 Oregon, 4-1

April 6, 2003

Right fielder Jessica Pamanian paced the seventh-ranked California softball team in its 4-1 defeat past No. 21 Oregon Sunday afternoon, batting 3-for-3 with three doubles and one RBI. The win completes the Pac-10 weekend sweep for the Golden Bears (32-9, 4-2), defeating Oregon State, 7-2, Friday and the Ducks (18-11, 2-5), 4-0, Saturday.

Pamanian led off the second inning driving the first pitch to dead center for her first double of the day, eventually scoring on a throwing error by Oregon's shortstop to give Cal an early 1-0 lead.

With two outs in the third, the Ducks loaded the bases off a single and two walks, evening the score at 1-1 off Beth Boskovich's RBI single to left field. Cal's left fielder Lindsay James threw a bullet to home plate, gunning out the runner trying to score from second to end the inning.

Cal regained its lead in the fourth, scoring three runs off back-to-back two-out doubles. Pamanian ripped her third double of the day, driving in Courtney Scott, who reached on a fielding error, and Eryn Manahan, who walked. Shortstop Chelsea Spencer followed it up with another double, trading places with Pamanian at second for an eventual final score of 4-1.

Reliever Kelly Anderson picked up the win, improving her record to 14-4 for the season. The righty tossed 4.0 innings, allowing no hits and walking none, fanning four batters as the only batter to reach base with her in the circle was on a Cal fielding error. Freshman Kristina Thorson got the starting nod for the Bears, allowing two hits, one earned run, two walks and three strikeouts in 3.0 innings. Oregon's starter Amy Harris suffered the loss, falling to 6-9 for the season as Cal gathered six hits, four unearned runs, four walks and three K's from the freshman.

Offensively, the Bears were also led by James (2-for-4) and NCAA walk record holder Veronica Nelson tallied three more walks, standing at 69 free passes 41 games into the season.

Cal left 11 runners on base, including two innings stranding the runners with bases loaded, to Oregon's three.

Next up, Cal competes against Sacramento State in a doubleheader Wednesday, April 9, first game beginning at 1 p.m.
