No. 9 Cal Wins PING/ASU Invitational By One Stroke

TEMPE, Ariz. - With three golfers in the Top 10, No. 9 California claimed its program-record fifth tournament title of the season with a one-stroke victory at the PING/Arizona State Invitational at Karsten Golf Course. The Golden Bears shot a 295 Sunday to finish the 16-team tournament at 876, one stroke ahead of No. 4 Texas.
The race for the desert title was competitive as the top four teams finished only three strokes apart. No. 16 UCLA was third at 878, followed by No. 5 USC at 879, while No. 6 Arizona was fifth at 886.
Junior Sarah Huarte led the way for Cal, falling just short of her second individual victory this spring. The Shingle Springs, Calif., product earned tournament runner-up honors with a 54-hole school record of 213. UCLA's Charlotte Mayorkas placed first with a seven-under 209.
Cal senior Vikki Laing and freshman Sophia Sheridan tied for ninth at 220. Laing fired a 76 in the final round to record her sixth Top 10 showing of the season. Sheridan posted a team best of 71 today.
The Bears have some time off before competing at the Pac-10 championships in Corvallis, Ore., April 24-26.
