Stanford Catches WSU Late In 8-5 Win
April 7, 2003
PULLMAN, Wash. -- - Washington State's Aaron MacKenzie pitched 10 solid innings but the visiting Stanford Cardinal scored three times in the eleventh inning to capture an 8-5 win over WSU in a Pacific-10 Conference baseball game Monday at Bailey-Brayton Field. The win gave the Cardinal a sweep of the three-game series.
Stanford relief pitcher David O'Hagan (4-1) threw the final three innings for the Cardinal (21-10, 7-2) to gain the win. He struck out four and walked just one while allowing one Cougar run.
The loss went to WSU (9-22, 1-5) relief pitcher Nick Kenyon, who took over for MacKenzie in the eleventh inning with the score tied 5-5. Kenyon gave up two hits and two walks while allowing three runs before Brett Beetham finished up and recorded the final out of the inning.
MacKenzie scattered 12 Stanford hits while giving up five runs, four earned. He struck out four and walked two.
Jay Miller led WSU at the plate with four hits, all singles, while Jeremy Farrar hit his third home run of the year in the sixth and Derek Bruce connected on his fourth home run of the season in the tenth. Bruce's two-out, first pitch shot down the line in left field earned WSU a 5-5 tie after Stanford had taken a short-lived 5-4 lead in the top half of the inning.
Collin Henderson was the only other Cougar with a multiple-hit day, collecting a double and a single in his first two at-bats. WSU had 13 hits, two less than Stanford, but the Cardinal had the long ball, including six doubles and two home runs.
After spotting Stanford single runs in the first and sixth innings, WSU battled back in the bottom of the sixth to tie the score on Farrar's two-run homer to left center.
In the seventh the Cougars took the lead 4-2 when Jon Baeder scored on Miller's single to right field and Fender came home on an errant throw from outfielder Carlos Quentin.
Stanford tied the game 4-4 in the ninth on a lead-off home run from Danny Putnam and Jonny Ash's run-scoring single. The hits by the two Cardinals were their only hits of the game.
The Cougars return to action Tuesday in a non-league game at Gonzaga, then go on the road later in the week for three Pac-10 games at Oregon State, beginning Friday.
