Late Rally Falls Short For Trojans
April 8, 2003
LOS ANGELES - Ben Quinto's RBI sacrifice fly in the third inning proved to be the game-winner Tuesday and the San Diego Toreros defeated the USC Trojans, 4-3, in non-conference action at Dedeaux Field. San Diego right fielder Joey Prast went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI in the win.
USC (15-17) rallied with three runs in the eighth inning and had runners at first and third in the bottom of the ninth but San Diego (18-21) reliever Tony Perez got Joey Metropoulos to ground out to end the game. Perez earned his seventh save of the season after starting the game as the center fielder for the Toreros.
Justin Blaine (2-3) earned the victory with four innings of work, allowing only two hits. Anthony Reyes (1-2), who made his first appearance since Feb. 14, took the loss after allowing three runs on four hits in two innings with three walks and one strikeout.
The Trojans loaded the bases in the eighth with no outs, but Jon Brewster grounded into a double play to score Jeff Clement. David Gordon followed with his eighth home run of the season with a two-run shot to left, closing the gap to 4-3.
USC shortstop Anthony Lunetta increased his hitting streak to 11 games with a 1-for-4 performance. He is now batting .500 (22-for-44) during his streak. Clement also has a 10-game hitting streak, batting .415 (17-for-41) with four home runs, four doubles, nine walks and 12 RBI.
The Trojans will host UCLA in a Pac-10 Conference series, beginning on Friday (April 11) at 6 p.m. at Dedeaux Field. Games on Saturday (April 12) and Sunday (April 13) will start at 1 p.m. with Saturday's game being broadcast live on FOX Sports Net.
