Sica Leads Ducks to Fourth Place Finish at Western Intercollegiate

April 8, 2003

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - Mike Sica shot an even-par 70 for the second consecutive round to lead four Ducks in the top 30 as Oregon finished fourth at the 56th annual Western Intercollegiate, Tuesday at the 6,445-yard, par-70 Pasatiempo Golf Course.

Sica, a junior from San Francisco, Calif., had rounds of 74-70-70 to finish at 4-over 214 and tie for 10th. It was the highest finish of Sica's career and also his first top 10. His previous best was a tie for 12th at the Alister Mackenzie Invitational last October. Sica also matched his season low with 70s in the last two rounds.

Medalist Steve Conway's 2-under 208 helped No. 10 UCLA hold on to win the team title with 855 strokes, seven better than UC Irvine's 862. Texas-El Paso was third at 868, the Ducks were fourth at 869, Pacific fifth at 870 and No. 19 Washington sixth at 877.

'I'm quite pleased with our performance,' said Oregon coach Steve Nosler, whose team had its fourth straight top six finish at the Western Intercollegiate. 'The greens were very fast today and we gave some shots away, but we also made some very good shots.'

Chris Carnahan, a senior from Albany, Ore., tied for 14th at 217 following a 75 Tuesday, while senior John Ellis tied for 26th at 221.

Kyle Johnson, a redshirt freshman from North Bend, Ore., was the Ducks' fourth player in the top 30, tying for 30th at 222 following a 1-over 71 Tuesday that was one stroke off his career low.

Oregon all but locked up a bid to the May 15-17 NCAA West Regional by defeating 10 of the other 12 District 8 teams in competition at Pasatiempo. The Ducks finished better than Washington, California, Oregon State, Stanford, UC Riverside, UC Santa Barbara, Long Beach State, Pacific, San Jose State and Santa Clara.

'I think we helped ourselves quite a bit by finishing higher than most of the teams in our district who were here, including a few who were ranked ahead of us,' said Nosler. 'This puts us in good shape to go down and have a good tournament at Arizona State.'

The Ducks return to action Friday and Saturday at the Ping/ASU Invitational at Tempe, Ariz.
