Pac-10 Notes: All alone in first place, STANFORD (7-2, 21-10) takes a break from Conference play this week to face Santa Clara and Sacramento State ... After sweeping the Cougars over the weekend, the Cardinal is ranked as high as No. 4 by both Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball ... In sole possession of second, CALIFORNIA (6-3, 20-14) hosts ARIZONA STATE (3-3, 35-7) in a three-game series at Evans Diamond beginning Fri., April 11 ... The Sun Devils are ranked fourth by Sports Weekly/ESPN ... In a matchup of the No. 3 teams, ARIZONA (3-3, 24-11) will take on WASHINGTON (3-3, 21-10) at the Wildcats' Frank Sancet Field ... Last season, the Huskies notched two of three over UA in Seattle to end their 2002 season ... After a mid-week game against Portland, OREGON STATE (2-4, 14-15) will host WASHINGTON STATE (1-5, 9-22) in a three-game series in Corvallis, Ore. ... USC (2-4, 15-16) and UCLA (3-3, 17-18) go head-to-head in traditional rivalry this weekend ... The two teams met earlier this season where the Bruins took two of three in non-league play.

ARIZONA (3-3, 24-11)Last Week: vs. Miami (Ohio) W, 11-10; L, 9-4; W, 9-4This Week: *Washington

Arizona played its final non-conference series of the year in which they took two of three from Miami (Ohio) by scores of 11-10 and 9-4 last weekend ... The Wildcats will host the Washington Huskies in a three-game homestand at Frank Sancet Field on Fri., April 11 ... UA is looking to avenge the 2-1 series win that Washington took last year in Seattle to end the Wildcats' season ... Sophomore Jeff Van Houten was named the Pac-10 Player of the Week for March 31-April 6 with his 9-for-13 (.692), two triple, one home run, eight RBI performance against the Red Hawks ... Van Houten paces the Pac-10 with a .448 batting average, while also leading his team in hits (56) and RBI (47) ... Junior outfielder Brian Anderson leads the Conference in slugging percentage (.793) and triples (7).

ARIZONA STATE (3-3, 35-7)Last Week: vs. New Mexico L, 11-7; vs. Grand Canyon W, 10-2This Week: *California

After splitting last week's games against New Mexico and Grand Canyon, Arizona State looks to further iprove its 35-7 overall record ... The Sun Devils will head to the Bay Area this weekend to take on second-place California in a three-game series beginning Fri., April 11 ... In the April 7 polls, Arizona State was ranked as high as No. 4 by Sports Weekly/ESPN, while also placing at No. 6 and No. 7 by Collegiate Baseball and Baseball America, respectively ... After posting 11 and 10 runs in their past two games, the Sun Devils extended their NCAA-record scoring streak to 475 games on interestingly enough, the eight-year anniversary of the last time they were shutout ... ASU leads the Pac-10 in team batting average (.348) and ERA (3.49) and is third in the Conference in fielding percentage (.970).

CALIFORNIA (6-3, 20-14)Last Week: vs. Sacramento State W, 5-0; vs. UCLA L, 10-2; W, 8-6; W, 12-9This Week: San Jose State, *Arizona State

California took three of four games last week, including wins over Sacramento State and Conference opponent, UCLA ... Against the Bruins, Cal dropped the first game 10-2, but rebounded to win both Saturday's and Sunday's games, 8-6 and 12-9, respectively ... After a mid-week game against San Jose State, the Bears will host Arizona State in a three-game series at Evans Diamond ... In 2002, California notched two wins over the Sun Devils to win the series ... The team ranks second in the Pac-10 in fielding percentage at .973, having committed only 36 errors over 34 games ... Sophomore reliever Jesse Ingram was named Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week for March 31-April 6 having picked up two saves last week, throwing 4.0 innings of no-hit, no-run ball, while striking out four.

OREGON STATE (2-4, 14-15)Last Week: vs. Portland, suspended; vs. Washington L, 10-4; L, 9-8; W, 6-5This Week: Portland, *Washington State

Oregon State won the final game of the Pac-10 series against Washington by a close 6-5 score ... The Beavers will take on Portland in a mid-week game before hosting Washington State in a three-game series at Goss Stadium ... OSU is fourth in the Conference in batting average at .304 through 29 games played thus far ... The Beavers have two players in Tony Calderon and Seth Pietsch who rank in the top-10 in batting average at .386 and .383, respectively ... The two have combined for a total of 88 hits, 60 runs and 55 RBI ... Calderon is hitting .556 in Pac-10 games only, while notching a .625 on-base percentage ... Senior Chris Biles had a good weekend batting an even .400 (4-for-10) with three doubles and four RBI against the Huskies.

STANFORD (7-2, 21-10)Last Week: vs. USF L, 9-5; vs. Washington State W, 6-1; W, 12-5; W, 8-5 (11 inn.)This Week: Santa Clara, Sacramento State

Leading the Pac-10 with a 7-2 league record, Stanford is set to take a break from Pac-10 action to face Santa Clara and Sacramento State this week ... The Cardinal traveled to Pullman last week where they took on Washington State in a three-game series ... After taking the first two games, Sunday's 11 a.m. start was postponed to the following day due to snow ... Although not quite normal weather conditions for Stanford, they fought off the Cougars 8-5 in 11 innings ... Junior right-hander John Hudgins tossed his second complete game of the season (fifth of his career) on Fri., April 4 against WSU ... Hudgins allowed only seven hits and two walks, while striking out six ... As a pitching staff, Stanford's ERA stands at 4.28, good enough to rank third in the Conference.

UCLA (3-3, 17-18)Last Week: vs. California W, 10-2; L, 8-6; L, 12-9This Week: Long Beach State, *USC

UCLA got off to good start notching a 10-2 victory over California last weekend, but went on to lose close 8-6 and 12-9 games ... After a mid-week game against No. 10 Long Beach State, UCLA takes on its Los Angeles counterpart USC in a three-game series this weekend at Dedeaux Field on the Southern California campus ... In the Bruins' series against Cal, sophomore outfielder Matt Thayer hit .385 (5-for-13) with a team-high nine RBI ... Thayer also hit his first career grand slam on Sat., April 5 ... He currently leads the team in batting average (.351) and has 10 doubles and 30 RBI ... UCLA currently ranks sixth in the Pac-10 in batting average (.291), having notched 341 hits, 64 doubles, 41 home runs and 534 RBI as a team.

USC (2-4, 15-16)Last Week: vs. UC Riverside W, 9-4This Week: San Diego, *UCLA

Southern California had a light schedule last week playing one game against UC Riverside in which the Trojans won, 9-4 ... USC has a mid-week game against San Diego before taking on UCLA in their traditional rival games to be played at Dedeaux Field ... On the line is the Lexus Gauntlet trophy, encompassing a season-long, all-sports competition between the two LA schools ... On Tues., April 1 freshman Jeff Clement hit his 15th home run of the season, becoming the first freshman in USC history to knock 15 or more out of the ballpark ... Clement, who is leading the Pac-10 in homers, is chasing Mark McGwire's season-best 32 home runs ... As a team, the Trojans are hitting .285 through 31 games played, with 47 home runs, tied for first in the Conference.

WASHINGTON (3-3, 21-10)Last Week: vs. Oregon State W, 10-4; W, 9-8; L, 6-5This Week: *Arizona

Washington hits the road this week to take on Arizona in its third Conference series of the 2003 season ... The Huskies defeated Oregon State twice last weekend, but dropped the final game of the homestand, 6-5 ... In those three games, UW's No. 9 hitter Brent Lillibridge went 7-for-12 with five runs scored, two doubles, a home run and three runs batted in ... For the week, he slugged an even 1.000 and also stole one base ... Washington leads the Pac-10 in fielding percentage (.979) and has committed only 25 errors, well below the 45.4 Conference average ... The team has played error-free in 20 of 31 games this season, while opponents have made at least one error in all but eight games ... Additionally, opponents have only stolen 15 bases against UW, the league low.

WASHINGTON STATE (1-5, 9-22)Last Week: vs. Gonzaga W, 8-6; vs. Stanford L, 6-1; L, 12-5; L, 8-5 (11 inn.)This Week: Gonzaga, *Oregon State

Washington State notched an 8-6 win over Gonzaga last week as the Cougars got four hits from junior Jeremy Farrar to lead the Cougar offense ... In its first homestand of the season, WSU took on Stanford and dropped all three games, but not without an extra-inning 8-5 fight that was played on Monday because of a snow-out on Sunday ... Washington State will play Gonzaga again this week before heading to Corvallis to take on Oregon State in a three-game series beginning Fri., April 11 ... The Cougars rank sixth in the Pac-10 in fielding percentage (.960), having notched 789 putouts, 339 assists and 26 double plays ... Leading WSU in batting average is junior Justin Hart who is hitting .333 in 63 at bats with 21 hits, 12 runs and two home runs.
