Bruins Defeat Washington State, 4-1

April 11, 2003

The No. 15 UCLA women's tennis team knocked off Washington State on Friday afternoon, 4-1 in a match moved to Lewiston, Idaho due to poor weather. UCLA (13-7, 4-1 Pac-10) was swept in the doubles matches, but won the first four singles contests to clinch the match. Singles matches at the fifth and sixth positions were cancelled once UCLA clinched the match so that the Bruins could meet their travel arrangements for Saturday's match in Seattle.

On the doubles side, Washington State's Lorena Arias and Chris Martinez beat UCLA's Sara Walker and Feriel Esseghir, 8-5 on court one. On court two, the Cougars' Orsolya Sallai and Annabel Stefanchuk defeated UCLA's Laura Gordon and Susi Wild, 8-3, and the Bruins' Anya Loncaric and Shilpa Joshi fell to WSU's Zsofia Fodor and Nora Gaal, 8-6.

But the Bruins rebounded in singles play, winning all four matches in straight sets. No. 12 Walker beat Sallai, 6-1, 6-0, while No. 71 Wild defeated Arias, 6-2, 7-6. On court three, Esseghir knocked off Martinez, 6-3, 6-2, and at the fourth spot, No. 77 Sarah Gregg beat Stefanchuk, 6-1, 7-5.

UCLA's Gordon was unable to finish her match against WSU's Gaal at the fifth spot, and Loncaric did not complete her match against the Cougars' Fodor at the sixth position.

With the loss, Washington State falls to 7-11 and 0-6 in conference play. The Bruins will return to action on Saturday at noon against No. 7 Washington (15-3, 4-2).
