CORVALLIS, OR - The UCLA softball team returned to Pac-10 action on Friday afternoon at the OSU Softball Complex, dispatching the host Oregon State Beavers by a score of 6-1. Home runs by Natasha Watley and Tairia Mims opened the Bruin scoring in the third inning, while Keira Goerl struck out eight en route to the complete game win. With the victory, UCLA improves to 33-4 (5-2 Pac-10), while Oregon State falls to 25-19 (1-7 Pac-10).
The Bruins scored first on a solo lead-off home run to center field by Natasha Watley, her sixth home run of the season and her second in as many games. The lead improved to 3-0 after Caitlin Benyi was hit by a Monica Hoffman pitch and scored on a home run to left field by Tairia Mims, her 14th of the season.
After Claire Sua walked and was replaced by pinch-runner Amanda Simpson, a storm front came in and the rains started at the OSU Softball Complex. Stephanie Ramos was able to put the first pitch she faced through the right side of the Beaver infield, and Ramos was able to advance to second as OSU threw to third in an attempt to get Simpson out. Both runners were safe, but were unable to further advance.
The rain cleared during the bottom of the third inning, which saw the Beavers load the bases. The rally started with one out as Keira Goerl walked Adrienne Alo and Brynnen Guthrie, who advanced on a double steal. After Shelly Prochaska struck out, Kelly Petersen was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two out, bringing Vanessa Iapala to the plate. The trio of base runners advanced on a passed ball, giving OSU their first run of the game. Iapala walked to re-load the bases before Steph Adams flew out to end the inning with UCLA leading by a 3-1 margin.
UCLA added a run in the fourth inning as Andrea Duran led off the inning with a single, and went to third on Natasha Watley's single, when both runners advanced an extra base on an OSU error. Duran would score on a ground-out by Caitlin Benyi, bringing the Bruin lead to 4-1.
The Bruins added a run in the sixth inning. Caitlin Benyi singled to start the inning and advanced to second on a poor throw in from the Beavers outfield. When Benyi was caught in a rundown after Tairia Mims grounded to the OSU shortstop, Mims alertly advanced to second base on the play, and was replaced by pinch runner Alissa Eno. Eno advanced to third on a ground out by Claire Sua and scored on a single up the middle by Stephane Ramos, bringing the score to 5-1 Bruins.
In the seventh, the Bruins added to their lead when Monique Mejia led off with a double to left center, advanced to third on a ground-out by Julie Hoshizaki and scored on a ground ball single up the middle by Andrea Duran.
Goerl earned the complete-game win, improving to 23-4 on the season. She struck out eight batters, including the side in the fourth inning.
