April 12, 2003
TEMPE, Ariz. - -
Oregon State freshman Kenny Coakley fired a 70 in the final round of the ASU Thunderbird Invitational Saturday morning at the par-72 Karsten Golf Course and finished tied for 24th.
Coakley finished the tournament with a career-best score of 6-under-par 210, but the Beavers slipped to a tie for 17th with a 287 Saturday for a total of 862.
OSU's team score marked the second tournament the Beavers have finished under par this year, but 16 other teams finished under par as well at ASU.
Arizona State defended its home turf with a tournament record 40-under 824, while TCU's David Schulz held on to his second round lead to earn a three-shot win with a 15-under total of 201.
OSU's next highest finisher was Sean Deacon, who tied for 53rd with an even-par 216. Deacon was tied for 17th after the second round, but closed with a 76 Saturday.
'Kenny Coakley played well again today, but our seniors didn't step it up this tournament,' coach Brian Watts said. 'We had a lot on the line as far as post season qualification, and unfortunately, we just didn't get the job done.
'We have one tournament left with Pac-10s, and if we can manage a victory there, we'll be okay. We'll have to play a heck of a lot better than we have been playing.
'It was too bad we didn't put a couple good back-to-back rounds together and have a strong finish this weekend in a strong field, but I was very happy with how Kenny played. He fought hard and hung in there.'
Greig closed with a 71 and Jurgensen a 72.
OSU plays in the Pacific-10 Championships April 28-30 in its final regular season action.
