No. 4 Bears (17-4, 4-1) Shocked by No. 39 Arizona, 4-3

April 12, 2003

Tucson, Ariz. - The fourth-ranked California women's tennis team fell on the short side of a 4-3 decision to the 39th-ranked Arizona Wildcats this afternoon, April 12 at LaNelle Robson Tennis Center in Tucson, Ariz. Cal dropped its first Pac-10 match of the year and falls to 17-4 overall.

The Wildcats seized an early opportunity to wound the Bears, doing something that hasn't been done March 2 - beat Cal's third-ranked duo of Christina Fusano and Raquel Kops-Jones. The Cal tandem was on an 11-match win streak until Maja Mlakar and Emilie Scribot handed them an 8-4 loss, setting the tone of the match early. The Bears still had a chance on courts two and three, with both matches engaged in down to the wire action. Jieun Jacobs and Jody Scheldt rebounded from yesterday's loss with a 9-7 victory over Debbie Larocque and Kristy Randono, but Nicole Havlicek and Catherine Lynch fell short on court three to lose the doubles point.

In singles play, more upsets were in the making as Arizona pulled out a huge victory on court one, as #10 Scribot handed #7 Kops-Jones her third consecutive loss in as many tries, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3. In the third position, things did not get any better for Cal as #52 Hollands ended #97 Lynch's four-match win streak, 6-2, 6-2.

The Bears made a come back on the bottom three singles spots, however, winning all three contests to tie the match at 3-3. #53 Jacobs got back on track with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Larocque on court four and Havlicek dropped Perry, 6-3, 6-3, on court five. Jody Scheldt added to her 11-match win streak, grabbing her 12th decision in a row with a tidy 6-4, 6-2 defeat of Zorica Zasova on court six.

On court two, #50 Mlakar and #31 Fusano were engaged in a fight for rights to win the match. Mlakar cruised out to a 6-2 first set win, but the Cal senior rebounded to take the second set by her own 6-2 margin. Mlakar proved too much down the stretch, coming out on top in the tie-breaker, 6-2, while handing the Bears their second defeat in the last three matches.

Cal returns home for its next scheduled match Wednesday, April 16, as the Bears host top-ranked Stanford at 3:00 p.m. at the Hellman Tennis Complex in Berkeley.
