Beavers Lose Series Finale

April 13, 2003

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Andy Jarvis became just the second player in Oregon State baseball history to hit 30 career home runs but the Beavers lost to Washington State 11-7 Sunday afternoon in Pacific-10 baseball at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. OSU (16-17 overall, 3-6 Pac-10) held an early four-run lead only to see the Cougars (11-24, 3-6) rally with runs in each of the final six innings.

The Beavers now go to seventh-ranked Stanford for a series with games Thursday at 6 p.m., Friday at 6 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m. All three games can be heard on KEJO-AM (1240).

The Beavers led 4-0 after two innings, but four OSU errors led to the Cougars scoring six unearned runs. WSU also outhit OSU 14-10.

'We came out early and pitched well and scored some runs,' OSU assistant coach Dan Spencer said. '(Cougar starter) Aaron Mackenzie was their best guy and we got him in trouble and got him out of the game, then we weren't able to maintain our focus offensively (against reliever Garrett Alwert), and we didn't play well enough defensively and we didn't pitch well enough.'

Jarvis accounted for the game's first run, driving a ball over the rightfield fence that cleared the ROTC obstacle course and landed at the edge of Washington Way before bouncing to the railroad tracks across the street. It was the senior first baseman's second homer in as many days and the 30th of his career; the only other OSU player to reach 30 career homers was Joe Gerber, who set the school record with 34 from 1997-2000.

The Beavers added three runs in the second inning, keyed by Tony Calderon's double to leftfield and run-scoring singles by freshman Chris Kunda and Billy Munich.

For Calderon, it was the fourth straight at-bat in which he had doubled over the past two days. It also gave him nine straight plate appearances in which he had reached base in a streak reaching back to Friday night.

OSU starter Jake Postlewait blanked the Cougars for three innings before giving up a pair of runs in the fourth. Washington State took advantage of a pair of Beaver errors to score twice in the fifth inning and knot the game at 4-4.

Oregon State regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth, though, as Aaron Mathews doubled to drive in one run and then scored on Chris Biles' single to make it 6-4. A seventh-inning single would make it the fourth straight multi-hit game for Mathews, who had tied OSU's record for hits in a game with five on Saturday.

Washington State tied the game again at 6-6 in the top of the sixth when OSU reliever Kenny Anderson hit two batters, wild-pitched them into scoring position and then allowed a two-run groundball single up the middle to Jay Miller. The Cougars then jumped on OSU errors to score two unearned runs in the seventh for an 8-6 lead and two more unearned runs in the eighth for a 10-6 advantage.

'Those things change the momentum,' Spencer said. 'And they capitalized on every mistake we made.'

The Beavers cut it to 10-7 on back-to-back pinch-hit doubles by Kerisi Reynolds and Paul Richie in the bottom of the eighth. WSU answered with a run in the ninth on doubles by Jon Baeder and Dustin Realini.

Nathan Pendley took the loss for OSU after giving up the two unearned runs in the seventh, dropping his record to 0-2 this season. Alwert picked up the victory for his 4 2/3 innings of work, allowing one run on four hits while striking out two.

The start of the game was delayed 58 minutes by rain. There was also a 29-minute rain delay in the bottom of the second inning.
