Cal Gymnast My-Lan Dodd Qualifies for National Championships
April 13, 2003
Berkeley, Calif. - Cal sophomore gymnast My-Lan Dodd became just the fifth all-around competitor in school history, and first since 1994, to qualify for the NCAA Individual National Championships, taking place in Lincoln, Nebraska, April 24-26.
With her fourth place all-around finish (39.275) at the North Central Regional Championships Saturday evening, April 12, Dodd earned an automatic qualification to the NCAA championships. The top two finishers that are not on a qualifying team, automatically qualifies for a trip to nationals. Since the top two all-around winners were from team-qualifiers Utah and Stanford, respectively, Denver's Michelle Kasuga (3rd place) and Dodd earn the bids.
Dodd will compete Thursday, April 24 in the first round of individual all-around competition, with the top four highest scores from each event advancing to Saturday's event finals. If she were to advance to the April 26 finals, Dodd would automatically earn All-American honors - something that has only been accomplished by three gymnasts in school history.
Dodd, a native of Seattle, Wash., led the Bears to a 12-5 record this season and a No. 18 national ranking. She bested every one of her previous best career marks, while recording the top five individual all-around scores in Cal history.
