April 13, 2003
Tempe, Ariz. - Seniors Ryan Wilson and Julianna Tudja each had career days as the USC men's and women's track and field teams put in some fine performances at the Sun Angel Invitational held at Joe Selleh Track this past weekend.
Wilson ran PRs of 49.67 to win the 400m IH and 13.53 to take third in the 110m HH. The marks are seventh and sixth, respectively, on the all-time top 10 lists at USC.
Meanwhile, Tudja flung the hammer 211-1 to break her own school record of 210-11 that she set in 2001. Tudja finished second to Candice Scott of Florida who threw a site-record 217-3.
Several other Trojans either put up personal-best marks or won their races in impressive fashion: Freshman Virginia Powell finished second in the 100m HH with a PR 13.39--sixth on the all-time USC list--and also ran a PR 11.78 to win heat two of the 100m; Freshman Raphael Asafo-Agyei ran a PR 1:50.84 to place second in heat two of the 800m; Sophomore Anthony Heckman ran a season-best 1:51.12 to win heat three of the 800m; Freshman Tunisia Johnson ran a PR 61.05 to place fifth in heat one of the 400m IH; Junior Brandon Matlock ran a PR 46.57 to finish second in heat three of the 400m; Senior Natasha Mayers won the 100m in 11.31 and finished second in the 200m in 23.52; Sophomore Wes Felix ran a season-best 21.15 to place fourth in heat one of the 200m; Freshman Adam Midles entered the USC top-10 list with a PR 205-8 to place second in the hammer; Freshman Noah Bryant placed second in the shot with a PR 56-10 3/4; Senior Spring Harris won the high jump with a mark of 5-8 3/4; Senior Dawid Jaworski won the high jump with a season-best 7-3 1/4; Sophomore Allen Simms won the long jump with a mark of 25-0; Both USC men's relay squads put up season bests: the 400m relay ran 40.08 to place third and the 1600m relay squad ran 3:06.50 to place third.
USC also had some athletes compete at the Azusa Pacific 'Meet of Champions,' with the main highlight being Julien Kapek's 55-4 3/4 triple jump that set a stadium record.
Both Trojan squads will next be in action at the Mt. Sac Relays held at Mt. Sac College in Walnut, Calif., on April 17-19.
