Bruins Head to No. 1 Stanford and No. 4 Cal for Final Two Regular Season Contests

The Bruins (13-8, 4-2 Pac-10) will complete their 2003 dual-match regular season this weekend with a visit to No. 1 Stanford and No. 4 California. Friday's match with Stanford will be at 1:30 p.m., while Saturday's match against Cal will be at noon. UCLA fell to Stanford and Cal, both No. 2 in the nation at the time, at home on April 4-5, 6-1 each time. Stanford stands at 17-1 overall and 5-0 in conference after sweeping the Arizona schools. The Cardinal have won 15 straight and have not lost since falling to Cal at USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Competition in early February. The Bears are 17-4 and 4-1 after being upset by Arizona last weekend. Cal and Stanford face one another Wednesday afternoon in Berkeley.

UCLA Splits in Washington . . .
The Bruins visited Washington and Washington State last weekend, defeating the Cougars but falling to the Huskies. On Friday against Washington State, the Bruins swept singles matches one through four, clinching the match. On Saturday in Seattle, UCLA was swept in doubles play and fell on courts two through six in singles. National No. 12 Sara Walker earned the Bruins' point, defeating No. 37 Dea Sumantri 7-5, 4-6, (14-12).

Bruins in the Rankings . . .
Despite facing two No. 2 teams in the nation on April 4-5, the two Bruin losses dropped the team to No. 15 in the April 9 ITA Top-25. In the singles and doubles rankings released the same day, the Bruins maintained four players in the top 80 and debuted a doubles team. Sara Walker is ranked 12th, Jackie Carleton 23rd, Susi Wild 71st, and Sarah Gregg 77th. The freshman duo of Carleton and Feriel Esseghir made its first appearance on the doubles list at 57th.

Stella Sampras Webster Guides the Bruins . . .
In her seventh season as the Bruins' head coach, Stella Sampras Webster earned her milestone 100th career win against No. 11 Tennessee. In her first six seasons, she guided the Bruins to five top-10 finishes at the NCAA Championships, including three top-5 showings (1997, 2000, and 2002). In 2000, she was named the ITA West Region Coach of the Year. The former Stella Sampras married Steve Webster on January 3, 2003.
