Softball Stumbles Against No. 3 Washington, 7-0

April 14, 2003

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State tallied seven hits on the afternoon but the Beavers were held scoreless, as No. 3 Washington picked up a 7-0 victory in Monday's Pacific-10 Conference softball action.

OSU falls to 25-21 on the season and 1-9 in the Pac-10 while the Huskies improve to 37-5-1 overall and 6-3 in conference play.

A chaotic first inning saw UW jump in front early as Amanda Oleson led off the game with a single to center field and eventually scored an unearned run after Beaver starter Amy Klever made an errant throw to first base on a grounder by Rita Roach. Klever worked her way out of the inning and kept the Huskies offense at bay until the fifth. Infielders Kelly Petersen, Brynnen Guthrie and Clare Burnum all made key defensive plays in the stretch, keeping OSU in the contest.

UW broke things open when Kristen Rivera blasted a two-run home run over the center field fence in the fifth inning and the Huskies added another run in the frame with an unearned tally after Dena DuBois entered the game in relief, pushing their lead to 4-0.

The Beavers had a runner reach third base in the first, third, sixth and seventh innings but could not get across the plate.

UW took advantage of three consecutive walks in the sixth inning to pad its lead. A sacrifice fly by Rivera and a double off the wall in left field by Kathy Fiske provided the final 7-0 margin.

Back-to-back singles by Steph Adams and Lisa Allen gave OSU hope in the seventh but Washington ace Tia Bollinger retired the next three batters to earn her 20th win of the season.

'The difference in the game was a couple of key hits for them,' said OSU head coach Kirk Walker. 'The home run (Kristen Rivera's in the fifth) really took the wind out of our sails.'

Allen, a freshman, led the Beavers with a 2-for-3 effort from the plate and Adrienne Alo chipped in a double.

'Our team needs to believe we can beat any team in the conference,' said Walker. 'Unfortunately, sometimes I don't think we keep believing when we get down.'

Oregon State returns to action on Friday when the Beavers head to Eugene for a 2 p.m. Civil War match-up against No. 22 Oregon.
