Angelo Tsagarakis Signs with Jay John's Program
April 16, 2003
Corvallis, Ore. - Angelo Tsagarakis (Sock-ah-ROCK-us) from Casa Grande High School in Petaluma, Cal., has signed a national letter of intent to play men's basketball at Oregon State University, Beaver head coach Jay John announced Wednesday.
The 6-foot-3 183-pound guard averaged 23 points, 4.4 rebounds, 5.6 assists, and 2.5 steals in his only prep season in the United States. He led Casa Grande to the Sonoma County League title, averaging 28 points in league games. Tsagarakis drilled a school record nine three-point field goals in a 41-point performance in the league's playoff title game victory over Windsor, 33 of those points came in the last 16 minutes.
'I have never seen anything like that,' Casa Grande head coach Jeremy Russotti told the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat after the contest. 'That was special. I have never seen anyone take over a game like he did tonight.'
Tsagarakis arrived at Casa Grande as an exchange student from the town of Auffreville, France. He spent the year previous to arriving in the U.S. on a French club team and is considered a likely candidate for the 2004 French national team.
'Angelo has excellent range and he will increase our productiveness on the perimeter immediately,' John said. 'It's no secret that our biggest deficiency last season was our lack of consistent outside shooting; the signing of Angelo is a big step in addressing that weakness.'
Tsagarakis and OSU fall signee Kyle Jeffers from Mongomery High School in Santa Rosa competed against each other in the SCL. They were selected Co-SCL MVPs by the Press-Democrat.
'He's a very confident young man,' John added. 'He is accustomed to playing against older athletes with his international experience, which will enable him to make the transition to this level easier than it is for many true-freshmen. He will make an immediate impact.'
