WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Oregon State placed five swimmers on the Pacific-10 All-Academic Team, which was announced by the conference on Wednesday.

Paula Finlay, Jessie Hong and Birte Steven earned first team recognition, while Mari Embertson and Kristin Huston each were named to the second team.

In order to be considered for the team, an athlete must have a 3.00 overall grade point average, be in at least her second year in school and be a starter or significant reserve.

Finlay, a senior industrial and manufacturing engineering major, has a 3.77 GPA and earned first team All-Academic honors for the third year in a row. She capped off her senior year with three top 15 finishes at the Pac-10 Championships, where she took 10th in the 100-yard breaststroke, 11th in the 200-yard breaststroke, and 15th in the 200-yard individual medley. She was also part of the 200-yard freestyle relay team that set a school record at Pac-10s.

Hong, a sophomore, carries a 3.91 GPA as a pre-industrial engineering major. A backstroke and individual medley swimmer, she earned a win in the 200-yard backstroke in a dual meet victory over Fresno State this season.

Steven, a junior All-American, is a psychology major with a 3.85 GPA. She qualified for the NCAA Championships for the third season in a row and came through with All-American honors in both breaststroke events to become a five-time All-American. She turned in a sixth-place showing in the 200-yard breaststroke for OSU's highest ever finish on any event at the NCAA meet. She was 11th in the 100-yard breaststroke. She was a first team All-Academic selection last year as well.

Embertson, a sophomore business administration major, has a 3.66 GPA. She placed in the top 16 in two events at this year's Pac-10 Championship meet. She took seventh in the 400-yard individual medley and was 16th in the 200-yard breaststroke.

Huston, also a sophomore, is in the university exploratory studies program and has a 3.61 GPA. She helped the Beavers set school records in four different relay events at this year's Pac-10 Championships, where she placed 14th individually in the 50-yard freestyle race.
