PORTLAND - The 20th-ranked University of Oregon softball team shutout Portland State, 4-0 in the first game of a doubleheader at Erv Lind Stadium in Portland Wednesday afternoon. With the win, Oregon improves to 22-13 overall, 3-7 Pacific-10 Conference while the Vikings fell to 13-20 overall, 5-3 Pacific Coast Softball Conference.
Freshman pitcher Amy Harris improved to 9-9 this season, striking out five and allowing zero runs in four innings pitched. Harris now has 108 strikeouts this season and is five shy of breaking into the top-10 all-time at Oregon. Junior Anissa Meashintubby (Monroe) relieved Harris in the top of the fifth inning and was equally impressive, striking out four batters and allowing no hits in two innings.
Oregon sophomore Erin Goodell (Roseburg) walked to lead off the third inning and advanced to second base on a single through the right side by senior Lynsey Haij. Goodell then advanced to third on a sacrifice fly by Amber Hutchinson and scored on a throwing error by Portland State catcher Rose Rutledge to give Oregon the early 1-0 lead.
The Ducks extended their lead in the top of the fourth inning after a single each by seniors Andrea Vidlund, Alyssa Laux and Janell Bergstrom to load the bases. Goodell drove in Vidlund with an RBI single to left field and Haij scored Laux with a sacrifice fly to right field. With two outs, Hutchison singled to right center to score Begrstrom and give Oregon a 4-0 lead.
Vidlund, who was named Pac-10 player of the week last week after going 7-for-14, continued her offensive hot-streak, finishing the game 3-for-4 with a run scored.
