Beavers Lose Series Opener

April 17, 2003

STANFORD, Calif. - Ben Rowe pitched Oregon State's first complete game of the season but the Beavers fell to seventh-ranked Stanford 5-2 in Pacific-10 baseball Thursday night at Sunken Diamond. Chris Biles doubled twice to move into second place on OSU's all-time list of career leaders.

Oregon State (16-18 overall, 3-7 Pac-10) and Stanford (25-10, 8-2) continue their series Friday at 6 p.m. and conclude it Saturday at 1 p.m. Both games can be heard on KEJO-AM (1240).

Rowe, who had beaten Stanford with a four-hitter in Corvallis last season, gave up just eight hits on Thursday. But Cardinal righthander John Hudgins threw a six-hitter, striking out 10 in a 150-pitch outing.

'Ben gave us a great start - the best of the year,' OSU head coach Pat Casey said. 'We just weren't able to pick up a couple of runners against a very good pitcher.'

Oregon State took a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the fifth inning, but the Cardinal came up with three runs to take the lead for good. Rowe and the Beavers should have been out of the inning with a 2-2 tie, but centerfielder Aaron Mathews and rightfielder Chris Biles didn't let each other know who should have made the play on a two-out fly Carlos Quentin hit into short right; it dropped for a double that drove in the go-ahead run and Danny Putnam added a run-scoring single to make it 4-2.

'We miscommunicated on a fly ball, or it's 2-2,' Casey said. 'Then what we can do in some situations the rest of the game changes.'

Donny Lucy added a homer to centerfield to lead off the bottom of the sixth for Stanford to close out the scoring. Lucy was 3-for-4 with a double and the home run on the night.

The Beavers threatened to draw closer in the top of the seventh inning when Biles poked a one-out double down the leftfield line and moved to third on a wild pitch; Levi Webber was then walked and he stole second as Paul Richie struck out. Hudgins then got Chris Kunda to ground out to end the inning and keep the lead at 5-2.

Biles doubled again with two out in the ninth, this time yanking the ball down the rightfield line past first baseman John Mayberry Jr. It was the 42nd double of Biles' career; tying him with Josh Carter (1999-2001) on OSU's all-time list behind only Joe Gerber (44, 1997-2000).

Andy Jarvis, who is just one double behind Biles on the career list, extended his hitting streak to nine games with a fourth-inning single. He was wild-pitched to second, then scored the go-ahead run when Tony Calderon chopped a double past third baseman Brian Hall into the leftfield corner; that pushed Calderon's hitting streak to seven games.

Stanford had opened the scoring in the bottom of the first when Quentin drew a two-out walk, then scored on Ryan Garko's double. OSU tied the game in the top of the second when Biles drew a full-count walk with one out, then scored on Paul Richie's two-out single to left.
